I'm not selling or trading here, I'm just looking for advice on selling a small collection. I haven't been on here long enough to feel comfortable with that. attachment2.jpgattachment1.jpg

A friend is looking to sell about 50 cards from the 1933 set, mainly three Babe Ruth cards. I attached a picture of one from the collection. How does he go about selling them?

I assume getting the Ruth's graded is the way to go, but that looks like up to $3,000 per card from PSA? Also, I suggested he contact a dealer like Dean's Cards to get a baseline offer, only because I have bought from them before.

My suggestion would be to contact one of the big auction houses. Robert Edward Auctions and Heritage Auctions are 2 pretty big ones. They actually advertise in Beckett Vintage Collector. With one of the big auction houses you will probably get the most exposure.

Hope this helps,

Bryon

Just seeing this. Would love to see a follow up and hear what happened with these cards.

They do exist, but elite cards in that kind of shape are virtually unheard of in general. Thats easily a 5-6 figure card if it were real and in that condition. I'm going to be that guy and say odds are very good that is a fake along with the others. I hope I am wrong and someone is sitting on a fortune, but odds are better of a lightning strike hitting you 3 times in a row!

I checked in with my friend today. They were a bit overwhelmed and have not done anything with them as of yet. I will update if anything happens. They live far enough away that I have not seen them myself, not that I could identify a good fake anyway.

Grading is very important for authenticity and to maximize value. There are a lot of experienced people who can help with submission or selling through consignment.

PSA and SGC are kings of vintage - don't utilize anyone else at this time.

This card is one of the most frequently counterfeited cards in the entire hobby.
Since you say that this is one of about 50 cards from the set that your friend has, send a common to SGC for grading. It will cost less than $20. If it comes back counterfeit, there's your answer.
