I mean isringhausen ended having an ok career as a reliever, however kinda like Jefferies, no where near the kind of player he was "supposed to be "
The Yankees and Mets have historically had overhyped prospects. Rueben Rivera, Kevin Maas, Joba Chamberain and of course the "Greatest Prospect of all Time" Jassssssson Dominguez for the Yankees.. And more recently for the Mets "The Dork Knight" Matt Harvey. I'm sure all teams have their share of these "suspects" but I think the NY media plays a huge role in the massive overhype of NY players.

I have a feeling this one will just be passed over like over-cooked spinach.... so I'm going a little early. If I remember correctly, this girl was only 15 in her first Olympics, yet she was old-school... no goggles! A-la Mark Spitz. When I swam and my goggles would fill with water during a race I would have to quit. I couldn't see a thing! I broke 2 fingers swimming into the bulk head while doing back stroke before (outdoor 200-meter)... It was a windy day and the flags were altering our turn strokes, so I thought I had at least one more stroke till I had to flip turn... NOPE! But ya, that's what I thought of when my eyes were full of chlorinated water! Anyway... much respect to this swimmer! It takes a special swimmer to master the stroke, and to do it without goggles is just mind-boggling to me now!

A couple years ago someone on here asked what we would like to see in a card set so as I ran across this one it seemed like the perfect opportunity for a nice relic.
The Joe Niekro Emory board relic. Just in time for the 40th anniversary of the Twins first World Series championship. 40 years? Good lord I feel old now. (I was in Jr High when it happened) For those of you who don't know or don't remember here is the link

Right? And he tried to grab it before the ump saw it... shortly after that game he was on Letterman and then when they clinched the AL championship, at the Metrodome celebration he got to the stage pulled a file out his back pocket lifted up to show the crowd and tossed it in the air, to the roar of 55,000 plus championship starved Minnesota sports fans. So classic.

He should be able to go into any nail salon in Minnesota and get a free pedicure for the rest of his life... lol

Oh dang. My bad!
No worries. It was one of those that passed under the radar. Granted he wasn't as talented as his brother Phil, but wasn't any slouch either. The other two nuggets of info on the Niekro brothers I love is Phil one year won 20 games and lost 20 games...in the same season. Pitchers today don't get 40 starts, much less 40 decisions. And Joe's only career home run came off his brother, Phil. (1976)

This was the ridiculousness of Phil Niekro's 1979 season
21 W, 20 L, 3.39 ERA, 44 G, (all starts) 23 CG, 1 SHO, 342 IP, 311 H, 160/129 R/ER

Also tied Joe with 21 for most wins in the NL.

Joe was the second member of the 87 Championship team to pass after Kirby Puckett both in 2006

I cannot believe that I never noticed Joe and Phil on the 1980 Topps Wins Leaders before. I've probably had scores of that card in my hands over the years and I never caught that! Damn!.

Even a certain ex President is wondering how I never noticed that!

No, no Mr. President ******* was not to blame for me never picking up on that, **** maybe but not Coke.

Dont feel bad it took me 35 years to realize the Padres team picture in the 1980 set was taken at the San Diego Zoo, and has an elephant in the background
