Lol... it says him and the owner were constantly bickering. But it all came to a head when Martin disagreed on MUSIC being played during a double-header in July, 1975, at which time he was fired. He managed The Rangers roughly a year and a half. He was almost immediately hired by The Yankees thereafter.

And it seems my Dad's friend Dave Nelson was there for it all. He was 2nd baseman for The Rangers from '72 to '75.

Wow! I can't believe I never knew Billy Martin was manager of Rangers. The only 2 I remember are Ron Washington, who looked like he was STILL into that booger sugar, and Bobby Valentine... and his tasty cheese fries!
His fatal accident happened about 25-30 minutes from me. He lived on a private lake which I'm sure was waaaaay off the beaten path. He died in Johnson City, NY but that is where the hospital was that he was taken to after the accident as that occured in Port Crane.

Just read about that too! What a way to go... he seemed like a tough guy but tumbling down a 300 foot ravine in a truck without a seatbelt would do just about anybody in... apparently his friend that was driving was much more drunk than Martin, the drunk people almost always walk away from accidents like this cuz their bodies just go limp.

I'd have been more impressed with the rare and evasive 1979 Topps Danny White #429 but that is a personal matter. LOL

Today is your big day to see what you get from the Mitchell Parstones trade unless the Cowboys traded the Packer's pick for that D-lineman from the Jets.

NFL Draft Day used to be one of my favorite days in the early days of the televised era or before it was aired on TV. The day after the draft biuying the USA Today was a must to read the analysis and draft grades. Now it is waaaaaaaay too many bells and whistles and way too time consuming. Just pick the freaking players and enough with the non essentials. Less is definately more in this case. The NFL is no longer geared to actual football fans but to a wide array of dillweeds who only follow football to be part of the "in thing".

Last I've heard is The Cowboys are gunna go for a safety from Ohio State, Caleb Downs.
If they get him and turns out ANY better than the safeties of the last decade it'd be a good pick, IMO. Cowboys get burned on deep passes at least once a game it seems.
I've got my list ready to fill in as the picks are made and my app tells me... I don't watch it. The talking heads just annoy me. You're right, just pick the player and move on! I think it's cool Mendoza is staying at home with family instead of going to that circus.

The Cowboys do have two first rounders ths year.....their own at #12 and Green Bay's at #20. They must have traded one of their 2027 first rounders to the Jets for that defensive lineman.

That #20 pick for Dallas is a lot better than most people thought it would be after that Parsons trade. Many thought Green Bay would have been in the top 4 contenders with the addition of Parsons. So the predicted late first rounder ended up being a mid first rounder for Dallas.

The same Davey Nelson who was a Brewers analyst for several years?

I believe so. I never saw or heard the Dave Nelson that I knew do anything with The Brewers... but if it's the same guy that played for The Senators when they moved and became The Rangers then yessir!

I heard a little factoid that might explain the signature crisis facing America's athletes... schools around here don't even teach cursive anymore. I didn't ask when this started but if it's like this in many parts of the U.S. then it makes sense why it's the old school players that still have awesome signatures and the new generation sign with scribbles or initials...

But that doesn't explain why the old school athletes speak so much better. It is really astonishing how much better the old guys spoke vs the players of today. Look at that article you sent me with the interview with Major Jones. That guy spoke the King's English and he grew up as a farm kid in small town Arkansas. I recently saw where Arkansas had one of the poorest educational systems in the U.S.. Maybe today , but it certainly didn't hinder Major Jones who grew up in the 70s and went to a HBCU for college. Times, they are definately a changin'!!

The Dave Nelson you are talking about never played for the Brewers. Aftter the Rangers he was with the Royals and he started his career with the Indians...............errr Guardians.

No. Dave Nelson that played for Washington, Texas, Cleveland could be the same Dave Nelson that did commentary for The Brewers. We're still not 100% sure if it's the same guy. Or maybe we did determine it was him and I just forgot.
Ya, Arkansas is pretty poor. By any standards. My first job when I moved here from Plano,TX (one of the richest areas of Texas) was substitute teacher. I did it for about a month, just for the fact I'd have to wake up at 5 every morning and wait for a phone call that might not even come. It was pretty sad seeing the lunch room. There were triple the amount of kids in the Govt. Assisted line than the regular lunch line... but then going to walmart and seeing parents use the same Government Assistance cards on tvs, junk food, and adult size clothes. They don't care. My first day I was assigned to P.E. class. Broke up 3 fights and had to ulglue 2 students making out in the bleachers, where the kids that didn't want to do anything could sit and do whatever they wanted... and those 2 were about to do it all!!
It makes sense why Major Jones was so well rounded. A firm family upbringing. You read it... the family had all they needed there on the farm and rarely had to go to town for anything. They worked on the farm... which is probably the best teacher of responsibility for a youngster there is. The times have already changed... and they're only getting worse for some in this country.
"Working Class Hero" by John Lennon... have a listen.

It looks like they did not teach reading in Upstate NY in the 70s. I totally misread that post thinkin it was about him being a Brewers player and missed the analyst part. Even Butt-head is making fun of me!

I did however looki it up and he is the same Dave Nelson that played for Texas and announced for the Brewers.
