I was looking through an old Beckett (August of 1985 if you can believe it) and noticed that there were only 4 cards from 1960 and later that booked for at least 100.00 dollars. That is from 1960 until 1985. Can anybody guess what those 4 cards are without looking it up?

That is quite surprising. I'll guess the 1963 Topps Rose Rookie, the 1961 Topps Mantle All Star , the 1967 Topps Seaver RC and the 1963Topps Mantle.

Wait! I'll replace the 1963 Mantle with the 1984 Donruss Mattingly RC, which sounds crazy but I know it was a $250 card at some point in the mid 1980s.

I was just thinking about asking the board if anyone had an old price guide from when the 1989 Upper Deck High Numbers Set was at it's peak. Walton, Smith, Abbott, Ozzie Canseco, Zeile, Gordon and Nolan Ryan with the football...

As a Cubs fan, I remember chasing the Walton card harder than the Griffey...

Thanks
Craig

You got two of them. The Rose was at 400.00 at the time and the Seaver was at 110.00.

But I am sorry to tell you that the Mattingly was 3.50. And no card in the 1961 Topps set was 100.00 or more. The mantle AS was at 80.00 at the time.

Two down and two to go!!

The issue I have in my hand is from August of 1985. Issue #10 with Reggie Jackson on the front. But as a Cubs fan you will be thrilled to know that Leon Durham was on the back!!!!

I would say 68 Nolan Ryan was one as he was always popular with collectors along with 69 Reggie Jackson would be 2 of the 4 along with the previously mentioned Rose and Seaver.

great guesses but I am sorry to say no on both of them. The Ryan was at 42.00 but it had an up arrow!! The Reggie was at 67.00 (remember those weird prices) but it also had an up arrow which was a sign for things to come!!!!!!!

Probably too early for the McGwire 1985 USA card. Maybe the 1974 Topps Hank Aaron $1 (HR 715).

The McGuire rookie was at 20 cents with a down arrow. I guess people were down on him by then. The Aaron was at 9.00. The whole set was listed at 190.00

The other two cards that were not guessed were the following:

1960 Topps Carl Yastrzemski #148 100.00
1965 Topps Steve Carlton #477 100.00

Even from 1956 to 1959 the only card that was listed at more than 100.00 was the 1956 Topps mantle #135 and it was at an even 100.00.

1973 Topps Schmidt RC. That was always a hot card back in the day. And I am going to give a very odd guess that may prove I am indeed an O.G. of card collecting. The 1967 Topps Brooks Robinson high number. That card was ALWAYS shown on the covers of early price guides and was a very sought after card.
