Things were a little rough at the salt mines, so it was nice to find these two returns in the mailbox when I got home.
1987 Bill Wegman Topps 179 Brewers
1993 Bill Wegman Topps 261 Brewers
1988 Bill Wegman Donruss 151 Brewers
Bill Wegman Self-printed religious card Brewers
Bill Wegman had a very respectable career as a starting pitcher in Milwaukee. His 81-90 lifetime record is somewhat deceptive. He had a career WAR of 16.2 and ate up a lot of innings for a somewhat up-and-down franchise. Mr. Wegman included a self-printed religious card. In case you are curious, his favorite books from the New Testament are Revelation and Hebrews. In 1991, Mr. Wegman won the Hutch award. Named for former Detroit Tiger Fred Hutchinson, the award is given to a player who "best exemplifies the fighting spirit and competitive desire of Fred Hutchinson." (In case you're curious, Tim Hudson won it in 2010.)
Carl Erskine Diamond Signatures Dodgers
2005 Carl Erskine Topps All-Time Fan Favorites 24 Dodgers
1995 Carl Erskine Topps Archive Brooklyn Dodgers 250 Dodgers
I suspect many of us know about Mr. Erskine. He played from 1948-1959 and one of those Dodgers who made the transition from Brooklyn to Los Angeles. He was a witness to that amazing decade in New York baseball. Even though I'm a Tigers fan, I am still jealous about how cool it must have been to be a part of that kind of circus. Erskine went 122-78 and was an All-Star in 1954. Erskine gives a lot back. In addition to working with charities, Erskine works with BAT, the organization that helps out former ballplayers. He was nice enough to include an extra Diamond Signatures card.
