Ray Guy in my mind needs to be in the HOF. Awesome returns.
I agree with you there. Two points:
1) when I send to punters, I always include an index card with three questions and ask which punters deserve to be in the Hall of Fame and Ray Guy is far and away mentioned the most, I probably have about 20 of these returned to me.
2) I think he is hurt by the specialization of kicking today. His career average of 42.4 is tied for 83rd now. With the advances in kicking mechanics over the past 10-15 years, almost every punter now has a higher career average, it seems. These kids spend their summers going to kicking camps. If you look at most of the punters back then, they played other positions (at least in college). Hell, Guy was an All-American defensive back his senior year of college. In general there was no specialization, you punted because you could kick the ball the farthest on the team, whether you played wide receiver, quarterback or defensive back.
