Did anyone else know this set was out?

http://sportscardradio.com/index.ph...eviews/1119-2011-topps-american-pie-checklist

Looks like a reboot of the '01-'02 sets. Perfect for my non-baseball collection, although I know most fellow Benchies won't be buying any of this because there's no baseball-ers in there. :)

Unlike the Americana cards that have been released the last few years, the American Pie base set is looking surprisingly good. I'm so surprised and excited about these that I had to post it on my blog. :)

All I can say is that I must have these cards, they'll be a couple of my favorites in my collection as a music buff!

I had seen buzz about this, but didn't know it was out. Thanks for the tip; poked through the checklist and made a short wantlist for myself.

Do me a favor and stay away from the Kanye West and Jersey Shore ones though. :)

I'll have to put some X-Mas money towards buying the base set of these if I can't trade for any.

i got 2 retail boxes and pulled 2 Event worn cards, Susan Lucci red shirt and what seems to be a very SP dean cain shirt. (this one is VERY thick and i dont see any on e-bay)
If you need any for your set let me know...

Broke 10 packs at Walmart last weekend and posted what I pulled in the non-sports section of my tradepage. I like these alot more compared to Americana.

Pretty underwhelmed by the checklist. The autograph list is nothing new either, IMO, unless you are truly craving a Carrot Top sig, LOL. I smell a dud, boxes will be dirt cheap this time next year.

Well, that's what happened with the original AP, and that one at least had a sports connection in it. I don't know who this appeals to.

Fans of Pop Culture. It's a trip down memory lane. I Was 5 years old, but I remember seeing scenes from Roots before I ever understood a thing about slavery or how groundbreaking that miniseries was. I remember the year of the Rubiks Cube, I remember telling friends that I'd talk to them later, the last episode of M*A*S*H was starting, or being jealous of my best friend because his parents got him an Atari! Back before MTV we had American Bandstand, Americas Top 10, later Friday Night videos was a mainstay if your favorite song had a video debuting that weekend. I remember hating Thriller because it seemed that was all I ever heard playing anywhere I went. I remember a time before every 12 year old got a cell phone, back when people were outraged a local call went from 10 cents to 15 cents, then to a quarter! I remember the look on my mom's face when we were shopping at Target, she knew it was something bad because they paged her through the store because somebody had to get a hold of her so bad they called the store, that's how we found out my grandfather had a heart attack.

Sets like this are a reminder just how much our world has changed in a very short time.

dirt cheap like the 2001 issue at $100-$150 a box?

have to admit i'm not all that impressed with the overall content, but it is "pie" and not heritage. "pop culture" - not history. way too much modern "pop culture" for me - sopranos, seinfeld, cal choppers or whatever it is - real toilet paper. i guess it's OK if you find the WWE/WWF too sophisticated. has some decent stuff that hits on the 60s & 70s but that's about it. glad it has no baseball - the whiners can just ignore it and go away. i'm sure they can find an issue that will supply them with their 3,273rd pujols card, dual butt-used braun & pujols syringe & a joe no-body 1/1 superfractor.

There isn't ANYONE buying that product at that price. My LCS cleared them out at $45 per a few years ago. Cite your source, please.

somebody is buying them. they routinely sell on ebay at 90-120 box. "a few years ago" isn't really relevent. i bought hundreds of boxes at $15-$30 box at a local card shop in the early-mid 2000's, and not just junk wax. sp hockey $30, 01 leaf r&s baseball $20, ud retro & legends basketball $30. cut rate prices indicate cash flow problems - selling at a loss is not a good business plan. selling at $45 is foolish or indicates financial problems. "pie" today at $45 box would be gone tomorrow.

First of all, using Ebay as your source for box prices is not sound. Find me a standard dealer selling them at YOUR prices and that's a reliable source. Secondly, you initially stated they were selling $100-150, now you've downgraded to $90-120, which is it? I did a search on Ebay, only 1 box for sale at BIN for $150. In the last 6 months, no completed sales of American Pie 2001 boxes, only one offered at a BIN of $105. So "routinely sell on Ebay" at your prices is not truly accurate.
Thirdly, my LCS has no financial issues, having been in business for close to 20 years. They have a policy of not holding onto junk wax, it just takes up space on the shelves. A wax box that hasn't sold in 10 years is not going to all of a sudden get hot and sell like wildfire. A good business plan includes knowing when to cut your losses. Although I guess Ford could hold on to some 2001 Fiestas and sell them on Ebay at full price, using your business plan.
2001 American Pie at $45 might very well be gone tomorrow- and it might sit on the shelf for another 10 years. Right along the other dud products, like 1990 Donruss, 1992 Topps, 1993 Stadium Club, 1996 Fleer, etc.
Again, I'm not looking to turn this into a massive debate, it's just my opinion that the new AP just doesn't offer much bang for the buck, and when that is the case, prices drop rapidly, and those who like this sort of issue (pop culture) could make a smart move and wait a few months and get more for their money. This isn't about what you like to collect, I see the appeal of AP to some- I just think Topps missed the boat by making this almost 100% pop culture, which narrows down the customer base.

don't know where you get no sales in 6 months - not correct. "pie" is on my ebay saved search list and i get a daily email of listings for the last 24 hours. i know the product - i track and actively buy & sell it. it's now a "niche" or non-sport product. it is not aimed at or intended for the sports card collector - hence no sports in the product. if a sports guy wants something with a twist they can buy ginter. i don't particularly care for the current AP issue but it is a pretty clearly defined product, not just another junk sports issue, with the "non-sport" crowd the intended audience. it is basball/sport free by design, not by accident. one can argue the merits if the current checklist/contents. anything with carmen electra & carrot top is certainly suspect.
