As I have mentioned before, I am on the Board of Directors for a non-profit that is dedicated to providing home repairs/remodels/modifications for disabled military veterans at no cost to the veterans or their families. One of the other things that we do is send care packages to deployed military personnel. I received an email from a US Marine Corps Staff Sgt, who let me know some of the items that he and his unit of 40 could use during their deployment to Afghanistan. Here is an excerpt from the email:
"....As for things we need/want a few things
come to mind right off hand. Any food stuff is great whether its snacks
stuff or things like roman noodles, packets of tuna, and can foods. That
and anything we could cook ourselves. We have no chow hall or dining
facility here so all we have to eat if premade meals that we heat up.
They are not too bad but it's the same thing over and over. So something
else would be nice. We have a grill we made and some cooking items like
plate warmers, a few pots and pans. That's primarily the big thing that
would help us out. Other than that some gear items would be the only
want we would have. But that stuff is usually costly and I don't want to
ask too much. Anything is very much appreciated and we will be helping
us out. It's the small things that will make this deployment easier."
As I am thinking about how to support this unit, I thought of a unique trade proposal for all of you. If you contact me to let me know that you want to send items to this Staff Sgt, I can either provide you with his mailing address or you can send the items to me and I will send them. In return, I will send you at least one autographed card from my personal collection. You can request players from certain teams or a specific player.
