I have 3 certified autos of Tom Sturdivant, Hal Reniff & Dock Ellis. All 3 cards are 2003 UD Yankee Signature Series. Since all 3 are deceased I am debating about making them custom cut Met autos. What would you do?

I'm an autograph collector and my inclination would be not to damage the cert. autos. I would try to find index cards of those players' autos and then try to make the customs from that.

CRIOLLOS has the right idea. I would do some kind of cut that will fit over the cert so that if you put it in a sleeve, it will look nice in your collection. It doesn't cause any damage, but it still works for your collecting goals.

@ criollos - I thought about the IC's but, no way to guarantee that they're legit

@ tigs I thought about using base cards of the above mentioned players cutting the base cards, then attaching to certified autos.

I paid 8 for Ellis, 5 for Sturdivant and 3 for Reniff. There is no way I would do it with something I paid a lot more for. Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

Unless you saw them sign the cards yourself, there is no way to guarantee anything is legit. It all comes down to taking someone's word at some point. Is the market for Hal Reniff really that overrun with forgeries you're afraid of getting a fake of something you can buy for $3?

If you are dead set on using the cards then by all means, do. They are your cards to do with as you please. To me it's just like the 'cuts' I see from one maker using a cut up card of another. I tend to avoid those myself because I'd rather have the other card as a whole card instead, even if it is a 'Hall of Fame Heroes' or a Pacific Greats type card. You are a Mets collector, and cards of those players in a Mets setting hold more meaning for you. If it's for yourself, knock yourself out.

I picked up an Ellis from the same set for a few bucks. Timing is everything.

Cut 'em if you need them to be Met's cards! You collect for your own enjoyment and those cards are not high dollar, nor should they ever be.
