I'm in the market for a new laptop. I need it to surf the web, play music, burn CDs/DVDs, but no gaming. I also need it for my potential deployment overseas. So where is the best place to buy one?

Directly from Dell
Best Buy
Other

If you can avoid going to Best Buy, please do. They load their computers with crapware -- even more than the manufacturers already do -- and charge you for it, since they "optimized" your computer.

Go directly through the manufacturers. Or better yet, forget the PC -- go with a MacBook!

I've never used Apple, so i'm a little leary. Besides, military is not compatible with Apple for what I need it for.

Try the base exchange. The prices always seem a bit more than Best Buy, but when you consider you don't have to pay taxes, it almost always comes out cheaper in the end.

Personally, I wouldn't buy anywhere else than Best Buy.

Avoid Best Buy as much as possible.

Id get one straight from manufacture. If you do go to Best Buy, dont have them have Geek Squad "help" you out at all, dont pay for anything extra, they rip you off big time.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll fill you all in after I make the purchase. For the record...I'm going to buy directly from Dell.

lol, yea I'm going to say avoid Best Buy as well. The best place to buy PC is through the manufacturer because they can actually customize the PC for your likings and needs.

Purchased Gateway and Dell in the past and only minor problems ......Nothing Major...knock on wood..Best regards, David PS I agree with the others avoid Best Buy! I waited 15 minutes for someone to help me in the computer section....The lady in charge of the department....did not budge to help me! A few minutes later...she noticed a pepper and salt guy with his teenage daugther and she took off and started helping them!! Your daugther needs a brand new computer will all of the new programs......over 1,000.00....plus you need three years of insurance and a new carrying case!! I heard the guy say....nothing but the best for my little girl!! : )

Best Buy is a fine place to get a laptop, as long as you avoid getting suckered into paying for extra service, software or warranty items. Just go in with the blinders on....and buy nothing extra. Believe it or not, Best Buy doesn't make money selling laptops...they make money selling extended warranties, accessories and geek squad service contracts.

Build your own on dell.com

I've done this too for my work laptop. I have been very satisfied with the ability to customize (needed Windows XP instead of Vista at the time and an extended battery...plus I got a great deal with bundled MS Office software).

That is where I purchased my laptop from, but now I am experiencing keypad sticking, and it's only 4 months old, and I only use it maybe 2 hours in a week. :(
Hopefully you don't get the same problem.. I'm going to call them tomorrow while it's snowing out side to get their idea on how to resolve the issue!
