for a very small town boy like me, its hard to fathom how a library can be so big as to have people not know whats in it that they make this kind of amazing discovery.

Yes, I'm sure there is some CRAZY stuff over there. The NYPL has some amazing stuff in their basement stacks. I've been meaning to get an appointment to see the Burdick Collection at the Metropolitan Museum. He had quite a collection, back when T206 Wagner's were $50 and Old Judge commons were 50 cents.

Some background information: Typically cabinets were premiums. If you got a certain number of coupons, you could send them in to the manufacturer with a small fee to get a "cabinet" or large picture. The thing is here that since most people would request the stars, the more common players are exceedingly rare, maybe even to the point of being unique. In the 1880's photography was relatively rare so cabinets were quite prized. For someone to accumulate over 40 of them is pretty amazing. Likely they were bequeathed to the library on death and forgotten about, buried deep in the stacks of the NY Public Library.
