Hello all,

Hope everyone is well! I am posting a new contest, and it will run through Sunday night! You are playing for a signed Rollie Fingers card, the owner of quite possibly the awesomest moustache in baseball history! Of course, there are others, and some of these fellows paired their facial hair with some pretty wild hairstyles, flowing out from under ball caps and batting helmets!

Simple rules, 1 through 75, one guess per member per day, and add your favorite image of a card with a moustachioed player (either embed image, or copy and paste web address) so we can all see! If no image, then tell us the player and we can search images as well!

God Bless, thanks for playing!

Kevin

To kick things off, I love Ken Oberkfell's moustache-mullet combo on his 90 Upper Deck card. Ken is a nice man, he lives and coaches not far from our home here in Southern Illinois, and has always graciously signed items before games, and is very fan friendly!

Ken is my entry, since not only does he have crazy facial hair, and a mullet, but he also has the flip up and down shades that ruled baseball in the 80s and 90s, my era! I loved the 89 Giants-A's Bay Area World Series, and that was the series that solidified my love for baseball!

Let's get some photos and conversation going!

No doubt about it, Rollie had one beautiful mustache, my guess is going to be Oscar Gamble and I would ask anyone who doubted his mustache and hair to get a look at his 1976 Topps #74T Traded card.... 55!

Well anyone who knows about Ben Davidson knows he falls under the categories of both moustaches and mayhem especially when you see the brawl he started with the Chiefs in the early 1970s..

Well since I can't use Ben Davidson's jersey number (#83) nor Otis Taylor's number 89 (my favorite player who got into the fight with Davidson), I'll choose Len Dawson's #16 since he is the player that got speared by Big Ben!

Go to the 1:04 mark below to see the legendary fight I am referencing.

Tomorrow I'll have a most interesting choice that at least one member (Quinton aka K.C.-Royals!) will appreciate. It'll certainly be an out of the box choice!

For today's guess, I'm going with Johnny Damon.... and as a Red Sox fan would say, "Looks like Jesus, acts like Judas, swings like Mary" picking #64 today....

I will try #29. And the image I remember the most is Otis Sistrunk on Monday night football with the steam coming off his head. He was bald but it was a great shot that I vividly remember.

Let's go with #34,
The one that stands out to me would be Don Mattingly and that big caterpillar on his lip. My son loved him & we collected his cards so maybe that's why he stands out. The more recent would be Brian Wilson.
Thanks for the Contest.

"what breaks out is years of frustration boiling over in this full-tilt melee!" LOVE IT! Never saw this play, and didnt know about Ben Davidson.....tough guy, that helmet spear hurt MY neck!

Thanks for sharing, super cool!

Thanks for the Contest.

Brian Wilson was a nut. Remember him and Jim Rome, when Brian talks about pulling a muscle during his first MLB start, and saying he went back to the locker room, realized it was pulled, and said "screw it, Red Bull time! Second Inning!" Strange dude.

LOVED Donnie Baseball in the 80s, but his moustache was bad even by those days' standards!

Saw Johnny play in Boston, along with Nomah! They were wicked cool! One of the girls in front of us at Fenway called Roger Clemens (starting for the Yankees that day) "an eyebrow pluckah!"

Heeeeeeere's JOHNNY! https://www.si.com/mlb/2017/12/28/johnny-damon-hideki-matsui-hall-fame-ballot-2018

Numbers thus far: 16, 29, 34, 55, 64

Gosh I love these threads! Keep the stories rolling in!

I remember that incident well as I was a die hard Chiefs fan as a kid. That rivalry was one of the greatest in pro football history and was a real blood fued. It has lost a lot of its luster in the past couple of decade though which is unfortunate.

Ben Davidson was an imposing looking cat as he was listed at 6'8' which was huge back then. Check out the third man into the fight, #30 Gloster Richardson of the Chiefs, who punches Davidson right in the package as soon as Taylor got him to the ground!!! LMAO!

I've never had a problem with pro athletes fighting. It is far preferable to have a bunch of evenly matched guys going at it instead of an overmatched regular Joe or even worse, a woman. If that fight took place today, the wailing from the media would have been deafening.

OK, I am going to cheat here on the moustache example and go with Tomi Joutsen’s stash. “Who?” everyone here says except for Quinton ( aka K.C._Royals!). Tomi Jousten, is the lead singer of Finnish heavy metal band Amorphis, whose allegedly crooked/uneven moustache on the video “Silent Waters” inspired the top post on the video below as well as lots of hilarious commentary on it..

2% of the comment section is about the beauty of the song
4% of the comment section is about how much they love Amorphis and the song
94% of the comment section is about Tomi Joutsen's moustache

I agree the song is legitimately beautiful and I agree Amorphis is awesome.but I’m not 100% sure if Tomi’s epic stash is uneven or it is the lighting that makes it look that way. Sometimes parts of it disappear and reappear. Here is the video. I report, you decide.

I can best describe Amorphis as the band where Quinton’s taste in metal and my taste in the genre intersect. Quinton’s taste is much more hardcore than mine which would be “Wuss Metal” in comparison.. LOL

Oh and I’ll choose Otis Sistrunk’s jersey # 60 since Raider d-lineman seem to be dominating the conversation! Thanks for the contest Kevin!

ha, yeah... I definitely might be the only Bench Member whose favorite musical genre is Death Metal. Amorphis started out as a straight-up death metal band and then got weirdly progressive and creative and went on to make some truly outstanding (and beautiful) music. But, that Death metal intensity and technical prowess is still the framework of stuff they do today.

back on course... I'll take Number 14.

my favorite baseball mustache is former New York Yankee and current Nagoya Chunichi Dragon slugger, Jack Elliot.

35 is my number, I'll go with Tyler Saladino's handlebar mustache with the white sox earlier this year and last season.

Numbers thus far: 14, 16, 29, 34, 35, 43, 55, 60, 64...LOVING the conversation, and Mr. Baseball! Great reference, Tom had an epic moustache for many years, and got teased a lot in Friends about that too from Chandler, as I recall!

And as far as Tomi's moustache, it definitely appears to have changed shape during the course of the song, a tad distracting!! Enjoyed the song, and cool band too!

Keep them rolling in friends, one guess per member per day, contest closes tomorrow night!!

Blessings,

Kevin
