My Parrish request perished

I think the charging rates have to do with Parrish signing too many TTM requests. He's probably done with signing so much. I bet this will significantly increase the lifespan of the blue Sharpies in the Parrish household.

Hopefully it's for charity. Maybe he'll sign inscriptions now, it'd be cool to have
"The Big Wheel" on a card with his sweet sig.

This is the message from Lance as posted on another forum:

To my loyal fans,
Due to the enormous amount of mail I am receiving, I will not be able to sign for free longer. Please send all autogrpahs to: Tom Wyroba PO Box 3308 Melvindale, MI 48122-3308

Thank you, Lance Parrish

Your card/baseball/Photo or flat $15 each
Your jersey/number/ or bat $75 each
Inscriptions are $5 each per inscription

You must include a SASE with all orders and I accept money orders only.

hopefully, this wont be a trend with players. it would suck if players start charging for their autographs. i can see paying a couple dollars per auto, but $15.00 is insane! especially since most autos can be bought on ebay nowadays for pretty cheap.

If this happens, the players will start justifying there prices because they will assume that all items on eBay were not signed by them.

So if you purchase from said player, you know you are getting the real deal.

First, I wonder about the prices, too. That's an awful lot of money. It always struck me as odd that players would charge so much to sign a jersey or a bat...does signing one of these really require that much more effort?

Second, I wonder about the income aspect. I suppose it makes sense to only accept money orders, but all of those orders will be a giant pain for his accountant.

It is a nice income source for older players who might have played before the big salary days, but newer players who made millions better only be doing it for charity in my opinion!

I would not typically pay more more than a few bucks for common players. I tend to pay more for better cards (nice vintage cards), tougher autographs and maybe items needed for special sets or themed collections I am doing. I think a majority of the mail order and show autograph prices are RIDICULOUS!

I realize that we are no longer in a time when a Mickey Mantle type player will do a card show and sign for $10, but $50-100 or more is insane. I don't see anything less than $10-15 for common players through the mail too! Who will pay $15 for a Floyd Bannister type? These are guys even team collectors would balk at for those prices! I have several hundred auto's cards that won't sell at $1 each, but these players would cost $10+ for a private signing I am guessing.

I have a dozen or more Parrish cards, all from ebay or trades and I bet I paid no more than $3-5 for any one of them, $1 or less for most.

Just to play Devil's Advocate here:

Lance Parrish was one of the victims of owner collusion in the 1980s. While he did indeed make millions and seems smart enough to have set himself up for life, he did get cheated out of additional millions he would otherwise have earned.

I am not personally opposed to sending him a small amount of money in exchange for his time (and the implied authenticity of the signature), but $15 is way too much to pay when you don't even get to meet the guy.

Although Biggio is often very blunt/final and one sided in his opinions and your statement is essentially true (no player actually owes any fan anything for their support and $$ that helped these players become famous and rich), I think they do in a way.

I'd like to think of it as they should feel a certain debt of gratitude to their fan base. When you think of some of the obscene money these players make to play a single game (it gets even crazier to break it down by AB or pitches thrown) and the understanding that the money they are paid didn't come from the generosity of the owner paying that salary for nothing in return but an honest effort, then it seems pretty reasonable that these guys would give a little back to those who made it all possible as a group.

How cool is it that someone can produce such a valuable commodity with only an investment of their time. A star player can spend a few bucks on some pens and paper and generate goodwill for hours and all it costs him is some of his time. Time that might be spent playing video games, watching TV or drinking beer. I am not even suggesting they stop charitable work, miss out on family time, skip workouts or anything like that. Just a couple hours a day or week or even month to say thanks to the fans w/o making more money on that time.

they owe us nothing, dude.

I would guess most autograph collectors are willing to pay something for those signatures they collect. In relation to our earning power (at least most of us), we have to set reasonable limits and to think players who made millions each season (more than most of us will make in our entire working careers) need to charge $20-100 or more, even if it goes to charity, can be a little more thankful to the fans.

Now the guys who obtain to resell help ruin this whole scenario, but that is the reality of life. Should all the great fans be hurt because of a few greedy guys. It appears the players think so in many cases. That is a shame too.
