Selling a Signed Card Collection... Thoughts?

Hi guys! I'm thinking about possibly selling my autograph card collection. 99% of which has been attained from TTM 2004-2011 and the rest odd balls have been IP/Ebay.

I know it's extremely hard to judge the value of something like this, but I'm just looking for general thoughts. There are some neat cards though like the Banks and the Longoria RC.

My first thought is…..don’t sell. The value is just not there. Look at all the time you invested getting these autos. Consider the value of these cards to you before you sell.

My son and I get lots of autos at spring training. This is so much fun and has many memories. I’ll never sell those cards (and baseballs) because to me, they mean more than a certified auto.

For the most part Traders want certified autos. They may pay for a TTM auto…..but….. not much.

Well.....turkeyred is right, though I know a LOT of people who would pay for this stuff on ebay, as like myself, I dont collect certified, high dollar, inserts, redemptions, etc. Just base signed cards ttm or in person! I know there is a market, it may be more narrow than for the higher dollar stuff, but you could always group in lots with some stars and common players, and sell the stuff off that way. Another great way is to sell by team!

I'd have to agree with turkeyred. I've been picking some up here on the bench for .50-$3 (most in the .50-$1.50 range)depending on how tough, what cards, etc. I've picked up a few ebay lots for $1-1.50 a card that included players like Kaat, Blyleven, deceased players like Jim Spencer. I grabbed a few HOF/future HOF/stars here and there for $5-12 guys like Glavine, Smoltz, Maddux, Thome, Raines, Oliva, Gary Carter. I can't speak for everyone, but for me, if it's personalized, start subtracting, if its on a 'second tier' card (Ted Williams Card Co, Conlon, Pacific, Swell, customs, etc) start subtracting. I tend to look for cards from their playing/managing days rather than ATFF/Archives/Legends sets. If a player is a fairly easy signer, I lose interest very quick at anything over $1-$1.50, figuring I can likely get them for 90 cents and a few minutes of time, though I do have to wait to get the card sent back. I also have a quirk in that there are a lot of players I associate with a certain team, so if I'm willing to pay $x for a Harold Baines signed card, it's for White Sox card, if it's a Batimore, Cleveland, Texas, Oakland, etc, I generally won't pay as much for those.

There is a market for TTM/IP, but many factors play into what kind of value you'll get: Player who signed and how elusive they are (most will be easy sigs if you got them TTM), card brand/year, quality of signature and color of ink/pen used, team represented, personalized or not, inscriptions, etc.

I buy TTM/IPs, but I don't pay a hefty amount, like valediction. I like certain cards better than others. I like certain photos and card designs better than others. I like certain teams better than others. It's all very personal to most non-certified collectors. They are building sets, adding to their favorite player or team collections or a variety of other reasons.

Figure it will cost you no less than $1 to get a card signed TTM, assuming cost of postage, supplies, the cards themselves, etc. For that reason, I see $1 as a starting point for autos and go from there. Sometimes I am not even willing to pay that for certain cards. Often times the fair market value is in the $1-3 range non-certified signed cards, and this will often include stars, deceased players and even HOFers! Sometimes more, but something has to be a draw for me (vintage, star, Dodgers, etc).

I have 100s of signed common cards that I would sell for $0.50 - $1 that sit gathering dust. The appeal has to be right...

Basically agree with others comments. ttm/ip autos will never sell for what they're "worth" as that type of collecting is definitely a labor of love. Considering the limited monetary value I'd suggest something like picking out your favorites and framing them so you could hang them someplace where you could see them on a regular basis and (hate to say it) dump the rest, get what you get.
