John Smoltz is another Michigan native the Tigers made a mistake on. They traded him and some other prospects for Doyle Alexander, who admittedly won them the AL East in 1987 by going 8-0 or 9-0. But the Tigs sure missed out on a decade plus of greatnesss for that short term rental.. At least in this case Smoltz was a low round pick and not a big time prospect like Frank Tanana was so hind sight is definately 20-20 in this scenario.. THe poor Tigers just can't win!

Right, but looking at it realistically the Tigers rotation included Morris, Petry, Tanana, and Walt Terrell. They were only 3 years removed from completely dominating the AL in 84 and there was nothing to indicate the complete collapse they had over the next few years. Smoltz may not have made his debut until 91 when Morris left for MN.
