As the steamy days of summer start to hit us (heat index of over 100 forecast here for the next 5 days), time to start thinking about where we are at in the baseball season.

Who are we looking at for the playoffs?
The Dodgers look to be locks. The Twins are trending as a WC at worst. The Braves seem to be running away with the NL East. The NL Central may be the hot race of the summer.

Who are we looking at as potential award winners?
Yelich/Bellinger for NL MVP. Verlander for AL Cy Young. Pete Alonso for NL ROY.

Who is buying and who is selling at the trade deadline?
The Phillies have a need for starters and relievers..if only there had been someone on the market in June that they could have signed without giving up any of their current players....great work by the front office in working out deals with Kimbrel and Keuchel!!!!

The Indians seem to be in the biggest pickle - do you sell? do you buy? Probably have to give them a couple more weeks to see where they stand.

I thought Amsinger and Lyons were going to throw down last night on MLB Tonight! They were talking about the Marisnick/Lucroy collision and the mandatory HBP that Marisnick got. Lyons was adamant that there was absolutely nothing that Marisnick could have done to avoid the collision. Amsinger was adamant that there was 6 feet available to slide to the far side of the plate. I am siding with Amsinger on this one - that was a simple head first dive to the back corner of the plate - yes Lucroy was up the line, but he was on the infield side of the line, effectively giving the runner the outside portion of the plate to either slide to, or even stay on his feet and just avoid the tag altogether.

Feel like a 2 game suspension and a HBP, are a pretty fair punishment for the collision.

Twins are a young team and I'm being ahead at this point of the game is a total surprise to me! MVP should go down to the wire...but Cody Bellinger is my favorite for the NL MVP....even if hes only 24 yrs old and most of the field is older ( Yelich is 28). Best regards, David

Twins are still hanging tough...but the Indians are charging in the AL Central. Feels like the Braves are taking the NL East. AL East is still the Yankees to win, although the Sox have put a hurting on them in Fenway. I would agree that NL MVP is either Bellinger or yelich right now, won't be decided until we see what happens with both down the stretch - still 2+ months of baseball left....

Trade deadline is only 3 days away, nothing major has happened at this point, which is very surprising to me.

So now reading that the NY.....METS have acquired Marcus Stroman from the Blue Jays. That feels like an extremely odd move, especially if they are planning on moving Thor???

And in other news - Trevor Bauer will probably be gone from the Tribe after throwing the ball over the CF fence after giving up a bunch of runs this afternoon against the Royals. Nice toss though!

Only 4 1/2 hours until the trade deadline...curious to see what all goes down.

Trevor Bauer to the Reds. Tribe get back Puig and Franmil Reyes from the Padres. Padres get the Reds top prospect Taylor Trammell. So the two "best" pitchers traded so far - neither go to a contender. Stroman to Mets/Bauer to Reds.

The Phillies get Drew Smyly last week and than pick up a pitcher from the Mets whose name escapes me right now....for a double AA catcher hitting .195.

Syndergaard says he won't be traded. Bumgartner may not be traded after the hot streak the Giants have been on - as they now have a shot at the playoffs. Does that mean Grienke has the best shot at being dealt - would his personality fit in the Bronx???

The Phils lose David Robertson for the rest of the year due to elbow surgery -- the 8 games he pitched in seems like it was well worth the 11.5 million they are paying him this year....

The astros pick up aaron Sanchez and Grienke - guess they are serious about winning the series in Houston this year....

Red Sox and Yankees do nothing....... Sort of a quiet trade deadline this year.

My trade deadline thoughts....

Indians/Reds - Why would you pick up Puig? He obviously is a horrible club house guy or else he wouldn't be with his third team in just a couple of yrs. His poor judgement has been on display and I'm not even talking about the brawls. I'm good with his actions in the bench clearing fights even though I think Dietrich should be beaned at least once a game until he learns how to play. By all accounts Bauer, although very weird, was a great club house teammate. My guess is the Reds drew a line in the sand and said, "you will take Puig as part of the deal". As a Tigers lifer and Cleveland hater I can't wait to watch this train wreck.

Yankees - Listening to sports talk radio is comical. Most Yankees fans I know have very little actual knowledge of baseball so it doesn't come as a surprise to me they are going out of their mind. They haven't won a title in a few yrs and their inaction at the deadline has New Yorkers ready to blow their top!! 30 games over .500 and they aren't happy....LOL!

My Tigers - Another yr of rebuilding. We had it good for many yrs in a row and a rebuild was inevitable. So many young prospects and I can't wait to see them make the show. Hopefully some of these former first round draftees we acquired will pan out.

Tribe needed corner OF power - Puig gives that to them. But I completely hear what you are saying about potential attitude issues. Tribe wasn't keeping Bauer, so thought they got a pretty good deal for him. Especially since they picked up Franmil Reyes as well - another corner OF with power. Still not sure why they didn't just resign Michael Brantley????

Yanks just need to get healthy -- I think the Mets screwed up everyones plans by grabbing Stroman. Although I don't think it matters - The Astros are the front runner to win it all after everything they got at the deadline. Verlander/Cole/Greinke - that is going to be tough to beat!!!

Tigers traded away a couple of nice pieces (Greene/Castellanos) and picked up more farm system help - give them a couple years...could be a whole new situation in the AL Central.

Curious who will fade first in the NL wild Card -- the Phils or the Nats. My $$$ is on the Phillies, just can't see them hanging around for another two months with smoke/mirrors. Braves are going to walk away with that division. Pirates have fallen out of contention in the Central - Cubs/Brewers/Cards all hanging around.

Seattle gets no-hit by a combined effort of Astros pitchers. And not one of them was named Verlander/Cole/Greinke. Aaron Sanchez started it off for them, sort of a move no one commented on after the Grienke deal.

Probably still way to early, but let's make some snap judgements...

AL East - Yankees (Red Sox have faded like crazy)
AL Central - Indians (Twins just a bit young to hang on)
AL West - Astros

WC1 - Twins
WC2 - ??

NL East - Braves
NL Central - Brewers
NL West - Dodgers

WC1 - Nationals
WC2 - Mets

That's right, I am calling it for the Mets to make the playoffs......

Tribe takes the first game of a 4 game set with the Twins to close the gap to 1 game. Twins left the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th......

In other news...The Phillies lose again, shut out by MadBum - trying to remember the last time they scored more than 2 runs in a game, or better yet, got a clutch hit when needed.....

Don't look now...but the Tribe has taken over first place in the AL Central. Two straight Carlos Santana walk off HR's......

Don't look now..again...now the Twins are back in first place in the AL Central - going to be a fun last couple of months.

The Phillies fired their hitting coach (can't figure out why..they are crushing it this year, especially with RISP), and bring back 468 year old Cholly Manuel. If that isn't a vote of confidence for Gabe Kapler, I don't know what is.....

Got the chance to see the Phillies in person on Saturday night - catastrophic mess!!! Kapler and his entire staff need to be fired!!! Their pitching staff made the Padres hitters all look like Tony Gwynn. On the plus side, the stadium is nicer than I remembered, hadn't been there in probably 12+ years.

Beginning to think that Oakland may be the 5th team to make the playoffs from the AL. And Minnesota/Cleveland looks to be a race that will go down to the final weekend!!

Dug the Cubs/Pirates unis for the game this evening in Williamsport - love that they are playing there every year. Would have been fun to go for three stadiums in three nights, but exhausted after hitting two in two nights!

Took some 9th inning magic to make that happen....And right now, it seems like it was 100 years ago.

And for all the talk of a juiced ball -- we have been to 3 games this year and seen a total of ONE HR. That was Realmuto on Saturday night.

The Sox have to shut down Chris Sale for up to 6 weeks - don't see Boston making a run at the playoffs without him going out there every 5th day.

Alonso sets the NL rookie HR record - will he be able to get the ML record before all is said and done??? With Tatis missing the remainder of the season, he has to be the presumptive rookie of the year.....
