Since I'm a sucker for never ending projects, I decided I'd finally take a stab at working up some sort of identification guide and catalog for all those unlicensed cards that got dumped on the hobby from about 1986-1992. I'll be focusing on baseball.

It's in its infancy at the moment, but I could definitely use everyone's help. Especially as I'm finding that there are some conflicts with regards to some of the set names and numbering.

Aside from just cataloging everything, I'd love to work out the origins of some of these sets. I don't see it happening, but I'd love to be able to post an interview with Rob Broder (if he's actually a real person) or someone from Pacific Cards & Comics from back in the day.

Very cool idea! Not sure how much I can help in terms of where they came from, but I do have scans of all of my Sandberg cards on my site (including the oddball ones). The issues NOT listed in Beckett are in italics. Feel free to use them, buddy!

I have a couple of Red Sox (Greenwell and Burks) Broder cards. I'll dig them out and scan them for you. Not much but hopefully it will help. I think its a great project.

I'm hoping that if I can compile some complete checklists, Sportlots will be willing to include them in their catalog, enabling them to be sold thru their site. As it is, I know there are tons of these cards sitting around, collecting dust, that player collectors would love to have access to and old dealers would probably love to unload without dealing with eBay fees.

I've heard from someone else that they'd seen them listed before, but my 2006 SCD doesn't list any of the unlicensed sets. Maybe older copies did?

These are Wade Boggs odd cards that just sit.

Are they worth trying to trade or just put them back in a box?

All depends.

1) My SCD is 5 years old, and out-of-date for a lot of things.
2) The prices for some of this oddball stuff aren't exactly accurate. Some of it's easier to find that other issues, but it all depends on supply-and-demand. And the pricing companies don't always take that into consideration.
3) It depends on who you've got. For instance, if a Boggs person wanted everything, they'd probably be interested, but for general trading, I doubt it. There's a LOT of Oddball Schmidt stuff that Beckett doesn't recognize, that I still need.

Sorry these are such as mess. If it's easier for you, I can probably get everything in a spreadsheet and just email it.

Does SCD list all the magazine inserts like Ballstreet, SCD Price Guide Inserts, Baseball Card Magazine Inserts, etc?

It lists less and less of that type of set every year as 5 billion new sets are released by the big two. My 2006 SCD does list the Baseball Card Magazine inserts, but not the Sports Card News or Ballstreet cards.

Looks like I need to find myself an older copy of the SCD since by 2006, they'd apparently ejected most of the unlicensed sets.
--update
Ok, bought myself a copy of the 2003 SCD on Half.com for about $5, so I should be able to knock out a lot of these checklists in a week or so.

Thanks for the help so far, everyone!

Here are some of the cards I have from different broder sets. If they aren't in the SCD Catalog I can provide a scan to help identify. -Tim
