I dont want to spend too much at all. But I do know a good one is at least 600. Where should I shop? What should I get? I don't have enough money for a macbook but would if I could.

Looking for something that would pretty much do internet browsing and basic things, no need for gaming. Any ideas?

I bought a HP PavaillionDV7.. has a, I think 18" screen, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB harddrive, dvd burner, some other cool features. I bought it at best buy for $650.00 Only bad thing is the 2 hour of battery life! But it is mainly for my daughter to learn on, so I just leave plugged in. Good luck.

eh, 2hour of battery life? Couldn't live with that at all, unless you can upgrade the batteries.

$600 isn't really going to buy a whole lot of laptop, IMO.
I'd try refurbished since your budget's smaller and you're not looking to do a netbook.

What are you wanting it to do? PC laptops are inexpensive now? I can run every single app on this that I can on my PC.. from photoshop to dreamweaver to sony vegas.. maybe it is a tad slower but nothing to complain about.

Also yes you can get up to 4 hours out of the battery if you turn on power saver! And I am not sure about upgrading, but you could just buy 2nd battery! ;)

From this past Sunday's sale papers.
Office Depot HP 16" screen, 3GB mem, 320 GB hard drive $479.99 after a $50 mail in rebate. 2hr 45 min battery.

Best Buy has several from $300-$700 depending on memory, hard drive, and battery life.

Office Max has a few similar to Office Depot.

The one place I will never buy any electronics is Wal-Mart. They have a strict 90 day policy. After that you have to deal 100% with the manufacturer. If I was going to buy from Wal-Mart I would buy on ebay first.

What are you looking to spend and what are you expecting? We need more info than "I don't want to spend too much at all" and "internet browsing and basic things" If you're looking for Internet and just very basic things, pretty much ANY current laptop will do. Figure about $450-500 to start and for things like better battery, more memory, more disk space, better graphics, etc, add about $100 per item and you should get a decent setup. Nothing amazing, but a solid unit. I've had decent luck with newegg.com, but there are definite advantages to a brick and mortar store, especially if you need service and aren't strong in the do it yourself dept.

Many current laptops have about twice the CPU power, 2-5x the memory and 2.5-5x the disk space of the desktop I'm using right now.

I have bought one for my wife and one for my daughter in the past year at Best Buy...both are doing just fine and run well....not sure what you are wanting to do with one other than the obvious net surfing, but i paid less than $700 each out the door and am happy with what I got.
