The Yankees have traded catcher John Ryan Murphy to the Twins for outfielder Aaron Hicks. New York also swapped infielder Jose Pirela to the Padres for right handed pitcher Ronald Herrera. Now the off season fun has begun.
I've always found teams making trades much more fascinating than pick up free agents. I've always felt there seems to be more analysis and an element of risk/reward in this method of roster change than from simply opening up the checkbook. The Twins-Yankees trade looks like it will benefit both teams over the next few years. Hope my Red Sox can pull something to get some starters and relievers.
Alot of teams, including the Yankees have begun to avoid overspending on free agents who usually become bloated overpaid under productive contracts. It has worked for other teams. Then the choice of preference becomes trades instead of free agency, though there will always be a market for top free agents but limited now that the Yankees don't spend like they once did.
