I was thinking about starting a larger and more recent TTM auto set with a mix of current and retired players. I don't like trying to get glossy cards signed so I'm looking for a good non-glossy set.

As I always liked Topps Total and UD XL football, I looked into Total and 40-Man baseball but those sets are ridiculous at 900-1000+ cards. I also remember UD Play Ball but I think that was a smaller set and the cards are ugly. A&G is a little too recent and has SPs. Topps Heritage has SPs too and I don't like the look of cards with facsimile autos and real autos together. UD Victory would have been nice, but it is glossy.

Any ideas? I am looking into the 97-03 range maybe, and the cheaper the better, lol.

What about upper deck heroes 2008 cards for both baseball and football!! They are nice clean cards.. no facsimile autographs, and they have a mixture of past and current players! And you can buy packs in the Dollar Tree for a dollar a pack!

Good Luck,
Christopher

The sets I like to get signed are the Greats of the Game, Topps ATFF, and the Topps 52 sets (great for rookies). Also, the 1987 Topps set is a nice one

Yeah, I like those sets a lot but I would be worried about them mostly having star players that are too hard to get. The player variety was what I liked about Topps Total but the set is just too huge.

I forgot about the ATFF sets. I'll have to look into all those, I think the 52 have facsimile autos though.
And there are too many people already doing 87 Topps :D if I did another set around that time I'd probably do 88 Donruss (the set that got me started collecting), or 91 or 92 UD (already have about 50 of each signed and they look great).

Yeha a lot do 87 topps... I just like the look of that set :) The ATFF set has a lot of retired players who actually sign... but do include some tough signers too.

I agree with the UD sets too... I love the way the 89-92 UD sets look signed. The alate 80's donruss sets shouldnt be bad as you can probably find someone on there to send you a flat rate box full of them for free (well for the cost of shipping).

A&G seems a little more recent than what I'm looking for (won't have enough retired commons/semi-stars) and don't they have SP cards in the set?

Maybe I am being too picky or don't know the checklists of some of these sets well enough. But keep the suggestions coming.

The A&G SPs are 1:3 packs so they are not that hard to get. The set is so popular that they are fairly easy to find in trades. I can't remember paying for any A&G SPs over the last three years.

Nice... A&G might have to be a candidate then...

A few that I've come across researching this morning:
2002 Fleer Tradition (also a bunch of SPs)
2002 Fleer (not sure if it's glossy)
2001 Upper Deck Vintage (liked this football set)

2002 Fleer Tradition: Nice set for autos. It was a very ppular set for TTM when it first came out... downfall is the # of SPs and I dont think they were as common. I actually still enjoy getting these cards back... updates too.

The 02 Fleer are not glossy and are also nice for autos.

I have some 02 Tradition but I think I traded away all my SPs. Ideally I would trade for a big starter lot or by an uber cheap set of whatever I'm going for.
