I just got this from Ebay.

Starting March 30, 2010 selling on eBay will be a better deal than ever!

List Auction-style FREE--no Insertion Fees--when you start your Auction-style listing under $1.

Get new, lower Insertion Fees for all other start prices.

Either way, pay one easy Final Value Fee of 9% of the winning bid (but never more than $50)-and pay only if your item sells.

List in Fixed Price for 50¢, with Final Value Fees for the most part staying the same.
This new standard fee structure will replace the current "first 5 listings free"--you'll pay no Insertion Fees whenever you list Auction-style and start pricing under $1!*

I was thinking it may be good for the little guys. Between the listing fees, final value fees. Paypal fees it was not worth it to sell dollar cards like the old days.

Ebay has made plenty of mistakes but this may be their biggest boneheaded move of all time.

This sets in motion them going the way of Yahoo. Remember Yahoo ? Page after page after page of low priced crap that got relisted over and over again because there was no listing fee. You think your auction visibility is low now because there's so many listings ? Well hang onto your hat !

Not to mention the fact that the 9% flat fvf will increase the price of selling a $50 item by 50%, and it gets worse the higher the dollar amount ($100 item increases by 70%).

You hit the nail right on the head. EBay Fees just went up a bunch if you're selling anything between $25 and $2000. Not to mention Paypal. There is a chart on the ebay community board to show you how much you will be bending over in the near future to feed their greedy and deceiving pockets. It is ugly what they are going to do to what's going to be left of any sellers.

Thanks for the doing the math on this. I'm sure it is not out to the goodness of their corporate heart that they make the insertion fee for free.

Just to cut them a bit...juuuuuuust a bit of slack...and because I'm bad at math...would it still be a better thing for those who haven't sold in years but may be able to move out some lower priced stuff?

Input is appreciated.

p.s....does one HAVE to have a paypal account? I have been a member since 1998 but haven't sold in years.

It's only the first 100 auctions per month that are FREE as long as you keep the starting bid under $1...after that it is $.10 per auction, as opposed to the $.15 it is now.

For your first 100 items, if they end under about $26.50 you fare better than the current fee structure. If they end 30-$500 the fee increase is HUGE !

The only thing you MUST HAVE is a way to accept electronic payments. So no, you don't HAVE TO have a paypal account but with it's popularity you'd be foolish to not offer it. Also, you're not allowed to offer in your description any payment method not approved by ebay and since THEY don't approve of cash, checks or money orders they'll end any auction that mentions them as payment options.

Don't be fooled, they didn't do it for safety reasons like they claim. It was part of a conserted effort to force the overwhelming majority of users to use paypal. Funny, you can still send ebay a check or money order if you want. Imagine that ? Ebay wants to offer their customers every payment option they can ! But not you, NOOOOOOOO, because they want that extra 3% from you. At this point they're little more than legalized gangsters !!
