I have to say I'm disappointed that he won't be going in as a member of the Chicago Cubs. However, I'm still excited that he is going in!

Thanks
Craig

Had a feeling he would stay true them.

He didn't have a say in it. The HOF decides what hat the player goes in with. He has stated several times in the past he would go in as a Cub if it was up to him. Read the link above about his text to the Tribune. He didn't "sound" thrilled in my opinion. Why not text the Montreal Gazette?

Thanks
Craig

saw an interview with the guy that heads up the HOF on Mike & Mike in the morning on ESPN, he said that they try to have conversations with player and give them input on how they go in, then they make a decision...so I'd say he had some sort of say in the matter.

The thing I found interesting, and what might have had some level of impact on the decision to make him an Expo is that when the franchise moved, they threw out ALL of the existing Expo records...none of that stuff went to Washington with the team...so whoever hit the most HR's as a National is the franchise all time leader....Mike & Mike made the point that if not for Gary Carter there would be no trace that the Expo's ever existed...and the HOF guy was like "That's very true..."....so...I bet that had something to do with it...because if not for Dawson, unless the vets elect Tim Raines and he would happen to go in as an Expo...that's all the Expo's will ever have.

I never knew they "deleted" all of the Expos records. Very interesting.

If not Raines, then possibly (although unlikely) Vlad Guerrero could enter the HOF as an Expo.

From what I've heard thats just a kind gesture by the HOF folks. They put what hat on you they want to. Do a little digging and you will see how Dawson was treated by the Expos Franchise. His book lays it all out there.

Thanks
Craig

*He almost signed with the Yankees instead of the Cubs...

yeah...just saying...they claim to at least consider it...I'm guessing it's for the reason I noted though...can't think of any other reason they would put him in as an Expo can you? Clearly his best years were as a Cub.

Should've been a Cub in my opinion. It was a close call I'm sure but to see a dead franchise get another cap in the HOF is kind of silly to me.

His first 11 (over half) of 21 seasons were with the Expos. He gathered 3 AS appearances, 6 gold gloves, 3 silver slugger awards and ROY honors as well. 6 were in Chicago where he did win his only MVP, had 5 AS appearances, 2 gold gloves and 1 silver slugger. Dawson never had what I would consider HOF seasons (49, 137,.287 was his MVP line), but he was solid for a long time. The numbers added up nicely over a long career. Heck, Luis Gonzalez will probably never get serious HOF consideration, but his big year was 57, 142, .325 and he was only 3rd in MVP voting that year!!! His career numbers are fairly similar to Dawson too.

I have never thought of Dawson as a Cub, always an Expo, but then again I seem to have a little spot in my heart for the Expos (Dawson, Valentine, Cromartie, Oliver, etc). Might be those red, white and blue uniforms (like the Dodgers).

and all 23 Expo fans went to watch him do it....lol....he had some good numbers but played on some bad teams...even when they had good teams no one saw him play...if he stayed and Expo there is no way he would have made HOF, the only reason he's in there is what he did in Chicago was able to get him more exposure.

I don't buy the exposure excuse. Even before the internet, there were radio and tv broadcasts, SI and other national magazines, etc. Besides, the writers vote, not the fans. Are you saying the writers saw more of him in Chicago? They ignored Montreal all together? Gary Carter did nothing elsewhere to warrant expose, so people were looking in Montreal at the same time. I suppose his 5 years in NYC sealed the deal for him then?

Regarding attendance, I was a frequent loner in the Kingdome stands in the 80s. The Mariners barely broke 10K at times! Still, they had no HOFers playing here, but had they, I don't think the exposure excuse would have been warranted either.

I think Dawson was lucky to get out of there and go to Chicago, and I think it's what helped him get in to the HOF...I think if he had similar production as an Expo then he would not have made it...just my opinion...and yes I think more people saw him as a Cub...even writers...as the Cubs were on WGN all of the time...and in the afternoon hours...very easy for a baseball writer to watch a Cubs game I think.

Gary Carter was one of, if not the best, Catchers in his day, there was a clear gap of talent between him and most other players in that position...Dawson did not have that sort of gap as clearly as Carter did...to me thats mixing apples and oranges to compare Cater to Dawson...the only thing they have in common is the Expos.
