It seems that Lee Smith has headed to the TTM darkside. I received my 1987 Topps back and the note below. Too bad, although $15 for a player of Lee's caliber seems like a fair rate.

I got his autograph about a year ago and he wasnt charging then.

I've heard of this starting over the weekend. This is new and you just missed him being free. Sorry to hear that of your bad luck.

well...that sucks...but at least $15 is not as bad as some of these guys are trying to charge...at least it's a pretty fair price.

The thing that really stinks is that my request went out at the end of November. I saw successes here and on SCN, and kept waiting for him to get back to me. I was pretty excited when I saw him show up today, until I opened it of course.

man thats too bad i sent to him on 3/22 still havent received anything back hopefully he signed my card

that stinks he didnt sign your card.. but $15 is not to bad of a price i think.. but did he keep your card or did he send it back unsigned?

He sent the card back so that's something. Although losing a 44 cent stamp is actually costlier than almost any 1987 Topps card.

I'm not surprised. With him just missing the Hall of Fame, I'm sure he got more requests. Unfortunately sites like this, SCN, etc. don't help. Once word gets out that a player signs, MANY people flood them with requests because they know its a good shot they'll get something back. Many went to the well once too often and this is where we're at.

I sent to him in mid-Feb. and I haven't gotten anything back. I had seen several on here post how quickly they got him back, and being that he was a Cardinal, I sent him a pair of Cardinals cards. Have been wondering, since I hadn't gotten anything back. Now I figure I will get the dreaded price sheet as well. Oh well, I am only out a buck for postage I guess. Could have been worse, I could have bought some fattening french fries from McDonald's with that buck, LOL.

I'm sorry to hear you just missed him. Smith was a pretty good TTM signer for a long time. No, he may not have signed all the time, but still a pretty darn good signer. It's a pretty reasonable fee, as well. I remember getting Willie Mays at a show in the early '90's for $30, as I recall. I remember some collectors talking about how his fee was highway robbery back then. Fast forward to 2010, and I would imagine those same collectors would be jumping over hoops to get the Say Hey Kid for only $30! Smith will make the HOF, and $15 is a pretty solid deal.

Players charging for an auto is such a joke...

How much did Lee Smith make in his career that he has to say "Please make all checks payable to: Lee Smith". At least start a foundation/charity or make an attempt to sound like the fees you are charging are going to a good cause and not your pocket or personal bank account.

Lee Smith made an average of 1.62 million per year from 1985 to 1997.
Think for a second, half of that or a third went to taxes.
Now Im not much for paying for autographs but, the fact is.. we all
probably buy or have bought auto's on ebay and didnt complain about
doing so.

You all know it takes time to look at mail, read mail and send mail and that
if you do it with care, you do invest time. I think Mr. Smith was good about
his effort to notify TTM seekers that he now must charge.
He couldve just thrown your letter away, atleast he's still willing to sign
but charges to cover his expense and to cope with letters he probably
gets that just say "Sign this" and thats all it says.

Im sure someone went to the well to much and was selling his Auto
for proffit, to make it right, I think Ole Lee is charging more than what
an auto card of his would go for, that way it stops monopolizing
off his name.

Just think a little bit more, some people went to games and waited
all day and probably spent 50 dollars just for a chance to get his
auto.. atleast for 15.00 dollars Your Guarenteed a Lee Smith signature
on what you want it on and have hardly any expense involved except
the fee and postage and return postage.

looks fair to me,
