i was investigating more ways to try and make a few bucks and ive seen a ton of dutch auctions on ebay. what do you think of these and are they a good idea?

i have about 100 gu/auto cards coming in and i was thinking of putting the auctions up on ebay with a BIN of 2 bucks and shipping of 1.5. the cards are mostly lower end gu and auto cards. there are good players in the lot so its not like im sending out 100 elmer dessens cards.

i was going to put all the cards in seperate envelops so its totaly random and putting 1 gu/auto in each envelope ( and possibly some of my base cards around here as a way to get rid of those) and then have one nice card such as my dimmagio gu card as the main prize that most dutch auctions have in one of the envelops. that way when someone buys an auction i just pull one of the envelopes out of my box and send it off.

my question is what do you think of the idea? now i know i will get some negative ebay feedback by people being upset by not getting the card and thats fine because from what ive seen most people leave positive feedback. but other then that. do you think a bin of 2 bucks is fair? shipping 1.50 is pretty good i think. and just in general do you think its a good idea or a bad one and do you like dutch auctions. i like the idea of them but i dont buy them often because i dont have the money to toss away

and one last question. what do you do after the big hit in the lot has been sold? do i continue running the auction or take it down if i find out its been sold? i wont know when it goes because i would make 101 envelopes and put them in a box and just take one out when someone buys so i wouldnt know if its sold or not.

The problem with most dutch auctions is that they promise a lot of potential and pay off mostly crap.

You probably need to figure that they will sell fairly slow if you only have a few cards worth paying $3.50 for. If the big hit goes out quickly and it's posted in feedback, you may lose the rest of your business. If you mix in more good hits, you will probably want more per lot and thus slow the sell rate further.

all the hits would be basic gu. it would be cards that i would normally sell in my 2 dollar threads on these boards. thats the main thing im worried about is the big hit going fast and it being posted in the feedback. then ill either have to put another good hit in or stop the rest. i may try it with this current lot of cards to see what happens

I love buying dutch auctions myself. Cheaper than buying packs these days.

i like the concept i just cant afford them right now. but what do you think of my idea. one gu or auto for 2 bucks plus 1.50 shipping with a joe dimmagio gu card being the big prize or a similar value card?

Honestly, I think you would be better off just listing each game used for $1-$1.50 starting bid, with some kind of bulk discount on shipping. I think most people tend to shy away from them no matter what you say will be in there.

that may be true. if this idea doesnt seem like a winner i will probably just sell on the boards. i usually do ok with them listing them for 2 bucks apeice on the boards. i was looking for a way to move them faster but it sounds like the consensus is that dutch auctions are not the way to go. and if thats the case id rather not give away a 40-45 dollar dimmagio gu card.

thanks for the input guys, keep it coming i appreciate the help.

I'd avoid the Dutch auctions. I know I pretty much assume I'll get a common, might hope for better, but I don't know I'd risk $3.50 a pop for the chance to win a DiMaggio GU when I know the odds are better of me getting the Richie Sexson or So Taguchi bat card

thanks true. it would be a 1 in 100 chance to get it. but i finally managed to sell the dimaggio so i dont think i will do the dutch auctions. it was a fun idea to kick around maybe ill do it some other time when i have more money. the biggest fear was the dimaggio going out early and being out a 40 dollar card and the auctions being useless after that.

I have found that if I'm patient and pay attention it is possible to pick up an A & G Relic lot of 4 or 5 cards and they average about $2 each card including shipping, the key is to be patient.

In those lots I know I'll be getting something that has very good trade value for a small amount of money.

No offense to you but in most of those auctions on ebay I doubt very much the big "hit" is ever actually given out.

Plus, that is a lot of work to put together to maybe sell a handful of packs.

Sorry about the long list of negatives, but who knows it could be fun, keep us posted if you do try it.

Thanks,
Frank

thats no problem i dont take offense. i feel your right about the big hit not being given out. im not like that the big hit would be in it. i would package up all 100 lots right away and put them in a box. but the fact that most people dont probably hurts my cause. im probably going to hold off on the dutch auctions and sell the gu cards on the boards for 2 bucks each. that way people can buy what they want.

Good idea. I think you'll get a much better response. It's a lot for me easier to pay $3.50 if I'm know getting a Brad Radke card than to take the chance of getting a Sean Casey card that really means nothing to me.
