2011 UD SP Legendary Cuts

Was on Becketts and saw that Upper Deck was going to bring back SP Legendary Cuts in a new format. It looks a little expensive for me and the photo's given not a good looking product. Still with a chance to get a John, Jackie or Bobby Kennedy auto it does look interesting. With 90+ HOF cuts the odds of getting a Bob Lemon or Bob Feller cut is just a little to high.
Have not made up my mind yet on gambleing on a box, have till June. Any input from the other HOF auto collectors that do not hate cuts ?

I say wait. Given SP Leg. Cuts recent history, the boxes tend to sell for less a couple of months down the road. Big risk, big reward. You may pull a Feller cut (when his on-card certified AUTOS go in the low to mid teens), or you could hit a Mel Ott. Personally I'd go for the older Leg. Cuts boxes.v I remember somewhere online selling the 2006 and 2007 Leg. Cuts boxes in the mid $60 range. I remember somebody here on the Bench hitting Connie Mack out of it (and was upset at pulling a manager he didn't know anything about, LOL!)

The selling point of this years product is its two cuts per box no base cards. With this it looks like a very high end item with the gamble being will you get that hard to find auto.

Ahh. Interesting. I definitely say pass then. For the money you spend on a couple of boxes, you could go to ebay and buy a centerpiece for a collection. That's the way I see it, anyway. No way I'd feel right busting something like that while pulling someone like Enos Slaughter, etc.

Save the money and buy the cuts you want. You'll be able to afford half of them for less that the price of a few boxes. All we need is more Hal Newhouser and Bob Lemon cuts out there.

I almost feel obligated to buy a case. SP Legendary Cuts have been the hallmark of my collection over the years. I have bought a case every year since 2005 and was sad to see them go away. I have pulled some awesome cuts (Dizzy Dean, Lefty Grove, Chicky Haffey, Red Ruffing) along with several duds that were not even in the Hall of Fame. Guess I will have to check it out to make a good decision.

Not being a fan of cuts, my opinion may not be well received. Those 4 "awesome cuts" are all what I would call tier 2 autos. Now the manufactured cut is more appealing to most than a 3x5 or paper cut that many of the early collectors would have gone for. Each is relatively easy to find at a slightly higher price than the average common HOF auto. If you are patient and a smart shopper, you could get each of those guys for less than a $100.

Something from the next step up would be worthy of praise, such as a Pie Traynor or similar. I am kicking myself for not adding Traynor early on when they were reasonable. Now I can't seem to find anything for less than $200!

The real score is getting a KiKi Cuyler, Rabbit Maranville, Arky Vaughan type card. Those are truly tough autos and very expensive.

I hear what you are saying and that is what makes each collector and his/her collection unique. In 2005/2006 when I got three of the cards there was not as many out there for sale as there are today. Even so the Dean books at $600 and the Grove is $250. They are not the marquee guys but I was still pleased to pull them. The cut autos are just so much easier to store than the PSA/DNA authenticated 3x5 cards and such but I do have some that I have gotten cheaper than buying the cut.

I do have a Traynor but can't find a Cuyler or the other guys reasonably either. Maybe one day.
