Another Great Garage Sale Find!

I picked up another great addition to my collection today, once again at a garage sale. I paid $2 for these two Kansas City Athletics newspapers. One is a 1955, printed two days before they hit the field for the first time, and the other is a 1958. They also mention big names in the MLB such as Ted Williams (glove advertisement), Mantle, Kaline, and Ruth (HR Streak Still Stands). It's cool to see advertisements for $6 Mantle gloves and $2 Williams bats. It also has a section in the 1958 where Don Newcombe talks about losing his catcher, Roy Campanella.

Thanks guys! These don't top my Joe DiMaggio glove I got for $1.00 but still love to find stuff for myself since my #1 reason to go garage saling is to buy and resell.

Wow that's a great garage sale find! One thing that has been impossible to find at garage sales for a decent price since the 90's is cards. Everybody thinks their awful cards are worth a lot of money...it never fails when I see cards at a sale that the owner is talking to somebody saying they took them to a card shop and they offered them $X, which was so low that they are completely trying to rip them off! Of course when I see the cards I always think they should have taken the money and ran because the dealer must have been high that day to offer anything.

Thanks Richard! Not only do card shops end up with the "good stuff" but I also see cards come up at auctions quite often. While I have gotten some relatively good deals, they go way out of my price range most of the time. I see cards come up at garage sales every couple weeks or so around here but they are mostly the mass produced stuff.. anything from late 90s-now or 85-later are almost extinct, it seems. Once in a while I'll see older people selling their antique items for dirt cheap, and with baseball cards being so popular in the 50s and 60s, I think, PLEASE LET THERE BE BASEBALL CARDS, but I almost never find any. I have heard stories like you said, though, where people have sold off 1000s of vintage cards for 100s of dollars. But then they say, "There were some old Mantles and Mays in there" and I'm like, was it really worth it? I'm sure card shops get some great deals that we all wish we could get but there has still got to be some old cards in some attics that will just pop up at sales every so often. Until then, I'll try to find some other nice additions to my collection. Good luck garage saling

Wow that is a fantastic find! I collect vintage advertisements so I'd love to have picked up that Mantle ad!

I actually just noticed that it is not even a Mickey Mantle glove in the ad though it says you can buy a Mantle glove for $6.95. All ads are on pages of the newspaper and there are a lot of them. My personal favorite is a small ad for a Ted Williams Little League bat for $1.49. I see something I missed every time I look at them but they are very brittle so I have to get them framed ASAP.

Thanks! It definitely seems like there are totally different garage sales in different towns, from what I've heard. I think some of it depends on how many collectors are in your area. There are not very many around here, from what I know. There are many sales around here that we don't find anything baseball-related at, but once in a while I'll find something for my collection.

Great stuff. These are the things I look for when going to yard sales. And when someone else finds it, I think it's great. Cool story, thanks for sharing.

Thanks Mike! I read your whole blog and that seems like a neat idea to show what you buy and sell every week. For the past two years, I've been keeping track in a notebook. While I don't make a whole lot of money like triple-digit items, it is still a pretty fun way to sell. I can't believe the Frito Lay erasers sold for $76! It gives me some ideas on what to look for.

I think we have pretty similar buying styles. I pick up stuff at garage sales and flea markets and resell them on eBay. I like to buy a variety of stuff as well, but video games and systems are my main priority and they seem to be easiest to find around here. Garage saling will probably be over for me this year as well due to camping and having our own garage sales, but thankfully, my grandma goes every week and she knows some of what I like.

Good luck to you at garage saling in the future! Glad to see someone else likes to do the same thing.
