I recently went through the Beckett checklists to doublecheck my wantlists for a couple of 1990's players I collect, Todd Van Poppel and Alex Cole. I found that there were a few cards Beckett said I needed that I didn't know about before, so I picked some up on the Beckett marketplace and Sportlots. When they came in I discovered they looked the exact same as some other cards I already had so I did some further research on the sets, which was inconclusive. Maybe some of you long-time hobbyists have a better memory of these sets than I do and can help me out with these:

1990 Classic Draft Picks #14 Todd Van Poppel - $0.40
1990 Classic Draft Picks #P14 Todd Van Poppel Promo - $0.50

Don't you guys try to deny you bought these back in the day :p . I already had 2 copies of what I believe is #14 (it's numbered that way and matches the ones on COMC), so I ordered the #P14 from a Beckett Marketplace seller and he sent the same card I already had, #14. Does anybody remember this one, like if there was anything different between them and did the promo actually have a 'P' in the number?
EDIT: Found a seller on Beckett with both #14 and #P14 and bought both, so he pretty much has to send me 2 different cards :D. Cost me $4, boo. I will be pretty POed if he refunds one and just sends me the same one I already have 3 of...seems like Beckett sellers pull that crap a lot.

1991 Huntsville Stars Line Drive #296 Todd Van Poppel - n/a
1991 Line Drive AA #296 Todd Van Poppel - $0.50

Does anybody know if there was any difference at all between the 1991 Line Drive team set cards and the cards that came in packs? I know that the 1992 ones are slightly different, but I have seen absolutely no differences between various cards from 1991 that are identified as being out of packs or being from team sets.
EDIT: Confirmation that there is no difference and Beckett just lists them dumb. Thanks Clyde!

1990 CMC #519 Alex Cole - $0.15
1990 Las Vegas Stars CMC #16 Alex Cole - n/a

Same question as above...the numbering would seem to be a giveaway, except on both cards I have it has "16" in a circle on the back (maybe his uniform number?) and then in tiny letters on the bottom "CMC 1990 - 519" like the one on COMC at http://www.checkoutmycards.com/Cards/Baseball/1990/CMC/519/Alex_Cole/1956417. I thought I had the #519 version out of packs, ordered the #16 on Sportlots, and they sent me the same card.
EDIT: The cards from packs have a yellow back with a player photo, the team set cards have a green back with a team logo in place of the photo. The seller goofed and sent the card that came out of packs.

1993 Rockies Upper Deck #538 Alex Cole
1993 Upper Deck #538 Alex Cole

Okay somebody should know this one...is there any difference between the regular 1993 Upper Deck cards and those included in the Rockies and Marlins inaugural team sets? Ordered the Rockies team set version on Sportlots and they sent me what appears to be a regular Upper Deck one, no different from the one I already had (and that's definitely the regular 1993 UD card because everything matches the gold hologram version I have).
EDIT: Mystery solved, the Rockies team set cards should have a gold foil "first season" stamp, the seller goofed.

Not a very good Sportlots experience for me. Just shows another reason why COMC is so awesome - you can see every card to make sure it's the one you need.

Thanks for looking everybody!

I can only help you with the last part. Like the 1993 topps marlins /rockies versions the upper deck has similar versions.

Heres an example of Junior Felix's base and marlins version.

Thank you! Looks like the Sportlots seller just sent me the wrong card.

I forgot that I have one of those giant Beckett Almanacs which explains the 1993 Rockies cards just like the Marlins Junior Felix above but doesn't give any clues for the other 3.

I got a PM which explained the CMC card difference and have edited my post. Another case of a seller screwing up.

In 1991, there was absolutely no difference. The only extra in the "team sets" was the addition of a logo/checklist card. But all of the player cards were identical, in every way, to the cards issued in packs.

In 1992, under the Skybox brand, there were differences in numbering and the pack issued cards had a brief bio beneath the stats, while the team set issues just had a Skybox logo.

Also, in 1992, the Skybox Triple-A All-Stars cards were identical to the players' team set issued cards.

Thank you Clyde, I was about 80-90% sure that the two 1991 Line Drive cards were the same but it's good to hear some confirmation after all these years. I knew in 1992 they really did have slight variations between the two since I collect a couple players with cards in the set and have both cards. I didn't know about the All-Star cards not being any different, though, thank you for that info!

If the sellers come through on a few cards I've ordered, that will bring my Van Poppel wantlist down to 2 cards:

1991 Leaf Gold Rookies Numbered Variations #273 Todd Van Poppel - $10.00
1994 A's Pogs Target #28 Todd Van Poppel - $0.10

I've never seen either of them and a quick search of eBay, COMC, and the Beckett Marketplace shows no cards at all from either set. I'll keep looking and will not consider the Van Poppel collection 100% complete until I hear that they don't exist, though. After all, a $10 Van Poppel card must be extremely rare, and I just hope the Pog exists because what could be more ridiculously 90's than a Todd Van Poppel Pog?

Thanks,
Richard

As an update (because I know everybody is so concerned with old Todd Van Poppel cards) something got mixed up with the seller I bought both 1990 Classic Van Poppel variations from on the Beckett Marketplace so I recently re-ordered. Got them today and the #P14 promo version is pretty obvious...besides having a slightly different border, the big difference is that the back is blank except for a big "FOR PROMOTIONAL PURPOSES ONLY". So I can check that one off my wantlist. Now I'm down to just needing 1991 Leaf Gold Rookies Numbered Variations #278 (never seen one) and 1994 A's Target Pogs #28 (also never seen one).
