So I am working on collecting A's cards, and have almost completed the 1980 team set. I found a couple of the color variations of Marchant Exhibits I did not have before. While I was placing them in the binder I noticed the two cards I received had a brown back, while all the other cards I have from Marchant Exhibits have a white back.

I can't imagine that someone took the time to forge this set as it is not worth much.

Does anyone know if all the cards also have a white / brown back variation?

Thanks - Chris

Is that Marchant, as in Marchant Cards/Paul Marchant?

If so, he is on ebay and could probably answer you Question. I used to buy from him mail order and noticed the name when I bought a minor league set from him recently. Now I just need to remember his user ID.

If anyone was interested, I have the answer from the man himself:

"All 32 cards in the set were issued in sepia, blue, and red tints AND on white and brown back stock---thus there were 6 different cards each. Paul"

Nice. I think Paul is a great guy. We only conversed via a short exchange, and I think took him back briefly with my comment about mail order from the late 70s/early 80s, but he just gave me that impression that he was one of the good ones.

I was not even aware they were called or referred to as Marchant Exhibits. I have partial to full (I believe) red and blue tint sets, but never paid any attention to the back color. I suppose they were all the same and never had any reason to think variation.

To be around as long as he has been he would have to be a good guy. I figured the Marchant name was a pseudonym, was pretty happy to see that he was still around and he got back to me within two days of asking the question.

Thanks for your help on this, although it means there are another nine cards I am now looking for for my 1980 set. Just when I think I'm done I find more I don't have!
