Don't know how you all feel about this but I don't like it. It was bad enough when they started cutting up Ruth and Gehrig bats and jerseys, but now they are adding civil war relics to the Goodwin issue. I would much rather have a contest to win the item(s) rather than a small piece of it...It's just getting to be too much. What's next the dead sea scrolls?

Either way it's a mixed bag. Make one person ecstatic or 2500 people happy, pick how you want to upset people

After looking at the Goodwins list I see no problem with it. We are talking about era items not battle worn artifacts. Most of the items are buttons and hat pins. They did cut up a soldiers wallet but then again it is a era item that may never have made it any south of NY City. Buttons pins and wallets are dirt cheap if you can find a real one. On a high not you could pull a Confederate bill that are hot right now.

Pretty much agree with this statement. Of course I am a bit biased, as I can pick up just about any type of Civil War relic/artifact anytime I want. Heck, I have about a pound of Gettysburg mud on a pair of work boots in my garage right now.....

While this is true, with the hat pins and buttons, I just think that there is so few confederate artifacts left, that it doesn't seem right to use them in this way. I guess it was the history buff in me that doesn't agree with cutting up stuff to make a collectable out of it.

That was not mud from Gettysburg. It was mud from the golf course when you played the Chief. :D :) :D :) :D

To me, that's normally not a huge issue. I guess I'd rather see it in pieces and available than tucked away in one person's collection only to be auctioned off to another person when the current owner passes away or needs cash.

I did not see any confederate items that were cut up from the checklist. For the other item what shape were they in ?. Our local historical center has a ton of donated items that are in bad shape and not worth the space to display. If you ever made it down south you will find more confederate items than you would think.

I can see that as a valid point of view. Just expressing my opionion as were you. No harm no foul.

They had the money, but maybe I misread it thinking they were cutting that up also. The flag they had was pretty messed up, but as with any nations flag, I don't think that is proper disposal. I have heard that there are more Rebels stuff down south, but you also hear that a large portion of it is fake.

Personally I'm a big fan of history & would much rather see it as contest as well or at least very SP'ed redemptions for the actual items. Better yet those type of historical artifacts & the significance of em should not be paraded around in sportscards. This is of course My Own Personal Opinion.

I agree, no harm in differing opinions. I enjoy seeing historical artifacts in museums, and shows about those sort of things, and can definitely see the idea of owning a whole item as generally better than a fragment. I just know in a lot of cases personally I'd be out of luck. One of my favorite movies is Casablanca, and buying Syndey Greenstreet's robe is way out of my price range, but for under $10 I got a piece of it on an insert card. Same with the baseball stuff. I generally have little want for 99% of game used cards. I love the history of the game, but owning game used Jackie Robinson Jersey or pants is out of my price range, but by them making GU cards, I added a genuine piece of history to my collection for the price of a blaster.

Have you even seen what shape the items are in? The wallet is in less than poor shape. If you were to win it like you say, you would be crying that you were cheated. In a case like this cutting it up would be a way of saveing it.

pins buttons and wallent may be from a historical era, but unless they can be certified that abe or stonewall jackson wore the button or pin then its just a pin or button, not a historical item. just like all the idiots that say we have to save every old building just because its old. these items may be getting a better home than rotting on a shelf someplace. plus it may stur up some discussion of that historical era that people will learn from, so unless its part of the paper from the gettysburg address then its really just junk

Very true regarding rotting on a shelf, even in places you wouldn't think. Prior to building the new visitors center at Gettysburg, many of their artifacts were rotting away in basement storage and even to a degree while on display for the public because they weren't being displayed properly.

Artifacts are the value you put on them. I have a collection of letters written by a distant relative who was a prison guard during the civil war - to a collector, they aren't worth much, to me they are priceless.

Would I rather see a redemption card and see someone get a full item, yes, but I can understand how a "cheap" artifact becomes a nice insert in a set.

What is worse - cutting up a rotted wallet or cutting up a Babe ruth game used jersey?

Opinions vary! I would much rather have it as a whole in it's current used condition than shredded cheese or paper. Do you NOT watch antique roadshow?
