They were more like a mail order place.........I think I found them in Baseball Digest, actually.......I'd read that cover to cover each month......They just sold complete sets as far as I could tell.......
Same. I remember seeing those ads as well. A friend from childhood did that and even then as a 9 year old I was like why would you do that? To each their own I guess

I was a paperboy (contractor) at the time and was flush with cash! Yeah, right........Figured it would save space, time, and money even though I did open the occasional pack or three..........

I had two experiences with those ads in the back of sporting publications back in the day. One was fantastic and one disappointing.

The Good: I asked (more like begged) my parents to buy a complete set of 1972 Topps Football from Larry Fritsch for about $15. This set included the impossible to find high #s. Lo and behold I got one for Christmas in about 1975 or 76, I still have it to this day and would never have gotten one unless I wanted to pay stupid money for one.............like 2 or 3 thousand dollars.

THe Disappointing. I orderd a complete set of 1967 Topps Baseball for $12. I waited and waited and waited but it never came. They said they were out of stock and to their credit they did refund my money.

The funny thing is paying those prices back then was considered insane because no one collected card back then. Sports cards were several years away from being semi mainstream and even farther away from being hot.

Yes, I was a kid back then and now I'm an OG of cards........"Old Goat". LMAO!!!

BTW you mentioned Baseball Digest. I was the same as you with Basketball Digest. Man, I just loved that publication. Knew who everyone played for and where they went to college. Cover to cover. I was truely obsessed.

Hawthorne Wingo. New York Knicks. Friendship Junior College.

Some things just stick with you forever! LOL

I find it amazing that Baseball Digest is still printed. But back in the day we got both Baseball and Football Digest. One of the funniest stories I've ever read was in Football Digest. It was from 80 ot 81 and Otis Anderson was on the cover if I remember correctly and the title of the story was "What the NFL will be like I the year 2000" Great stuff.

Here's one for today!

Pudge!! Loved going to games to see him, Juan Canseco, Rafi, Juan Gonzalez, Rusty Greer... and of course Nolan Ryan. Me and my Dad were there when Kenny Rogers threw his Perfect Game. My Dad wasn't even a Rangers fan he just liked taking me to games, but by the 8th inning I had never seen him more excited!! By that inning most of The Angels had gone to the clubhouse. There were like 3 players left in the dugout! lol
Sorry, when I see the Rangers of the 90s alot of memories come flooding back!!
