What was your first trade on "The Bench"?

My first trade on the Bench was not a good beginning. It was a Trade Gone Bad. Luckily I used DC and my "partner" marked he received my side and more or less admitted to never sending his side. I almost gave up at that, but the mods were so helpful I tried again and have made many successful...

What do your parents/wife/husband..ect think of your card hobby?

My wife is very supportive of my collection/habit/adiction to baseball cards. Before our daughter was born, she would actually go to shows with me and have me print out a duplicate list. I was putting together vintage sets (73-78 Topps). She would go through boxes at other tables, have the...

VINTAGE Collectors: How do you store your cards?

All my personal collection (Topps sets 1971 through 2010 and the beginning of 1970) are in Ultra-Pro pages (9 per sheet) and in binders as I tend to look through them alot. I've never had a problem with damage, but I do keep them on a high shelf. I also have them insured. Thanks, Marvin

A new beginning or the end of the road? (A Hypothetical Scenario)

I would guess, if I were put in this situation, after the important stuff was taken care of my immediate reaction would be to take the insurance money and use it to persue some of my other hobbies. Then one day I would catch a glimpse of something (it could be something as simple as kids...

    The 2011 Collecting Goals thread

2011 Collecting Goals 1. Complete the 2011 Topps base and Update series (and one for my daughter). 2. Plug away on my 1970 Topps baseball set (33/720 or 4.5%). I need some inspiration here. 3. Work on Carl Furillo player collection by atleast getting his Topps run 1956 - 1960. 4. Finish up the...

Curious about your 2010 collecting goals

    1. Technically I started (33/720 or 4.5%). I'm just not "feeling" another hard set like this. 2. Done and done (and one for my daughter too.) 3. Decided on Furillo (step one), picked up a few and added a page to my site. 4. Cleaned up all of the 1974 Washington variations, but still missing a...

    Plastic sheets damaging cards?

I have all of my Topps set run from 1971 to 2010 in Ultra Pro sheets/pages. I know over the summer of 1994 is when I bought a 1000 sheets and moved many of my sets from boxes to sheets over the summer. I just pulled out my 1989 Topps set (yes I know the sheets are worth more than the set...

What happens to your damaged cards?

Those pictures of your daughter could have been taken in my 6 year old daughter's room (right down to the colorful little bracelets on her wrist). I've done the same thing with my damaged cards and alot of late 80's through early 90's cards. She is extremely impressed with the 89 Donruss cards...

Curious about your 2010 collecting goals

All-Star Break update: 1. Barely started the 1970, 6 out of 720. I'm getting the itch though. 2. 2010 Topps Series I and II complete. 3. Decided on Furillo and picked up a 52 Bowman and both 57 Topps. 4. Finished the 1974 Topps Washington variations, still need a few from 89 Topps and 91 Topps...

I'd like to chat with a card store owner

I know a guy who runs a what I would call successful sports card business, using all three venues (online, card shows and store front). He basically explained it to me that he uses card shows to sell items that are "hot" and of local interest. The Internet (Ebay) to sell things that are not...

I could only get one box (I wanted 2) when I ordered a few weeks ago. They said that was all they had for the pre-order stuff. Thanks, Marvin

    Blowout Cards Question

I've always had great luck with Dave & Adams. If you order on a Thursday you can get free shipping on orders over $50 and they give free packs on orders over $75. Just my two cents, Marvin

    Worst Trade You've Made

In my opinion, that Billy Ripken card is probably responsible for more one sided trades than any card ever made. My worst trade started off okay, but I'd take it back in a heart beat now. I received a 1989 Ripken FF (because one of my friend's mothers wouldn't let him keep it after he pulled...

Curious about your 2010 collecting goals

2010 Collecting Goals 1. Get started on a 1970 Topps baseball set by June or so. 2. Complete the 2010 Topps base and Updates & Higlights series. 3. Possibly start a player collection, either Gil Hodges or Carl Furillo. 4. Clean up some of the variation cards I need from Topps sets, especially...

    09 Collecting Goals

    1. Completed in late July - probably my best collecting accomplishment. 2. Failed miserably. Cheated and bought the 1971 set about a week after finishing 1972 and still paying for it, which has slowed down my collecting. 3. Put together the base, but purchased the Updates & Highlights 4. Made...
