In my letter I asked him if the company he worked for was Nike. Since he went to Oregon in the early 70s, I also asked if he knew Steve Prefontaine as I was only 3 1/2 years old when he died in 1975.
Here's what he wrote back:
Tim,
Thanks for your nice note. The athletic company I worked for was Blue Ribbon Sports, now known as Nike.

Regarding Steve Prefontaine, he was a sophomore when I was a senior. He was as passionate a competitor & athlete as all you read about & see on film indicates. I knew him reasonably well & was always a fan of his athletic accomplishments & passion for his sport.
