2011 Bowman Platinum were the first boxes I broke this year and, wow, what a disappointment this year.

I just got a redemption AUTO in the mail today for a guy who was a 20th round draft pick. Maybe I got a little spoiled by pulling a 1/1 AUTO and a Strasburg/Heyward dual AUTO last year, but there's no doubt that the checklist this year just doesn't compare. So many of the guys on this year's AUTO checklist have had AUTOs in previous years.

The cards also have an all-too-common defect, where the surface coating is messed up. I don't feel comfortable trading those cards -- they're just garbage.

I hope Topps does better with the rest of the season.

(I don't know if anybody reads these, but if you did, thanks for listening to my rant.)

Thanks,
Trevor

Hi David,

I'm excited for my Finest boxes to arrive. I'm glad they've dropped the silly manufactured patch AUTOs in favor of on-card prospect AUTOs.

Good luck with your breaks,
Trevor

Topps is getting smarter in realizing that they can pay an average prospect waaaay less that a top tier one to sign autos and still get people to buy the boxes. It's just good business.

That's certainly true in the near term, but it comes at the expense of the brand in the long run. Over time, consumers get smarter, too.

Personally, next year, I'll take wait and see approach on Bowman Platinum, rather than pre-ordering before the checklist is finalized.
