and at a card shop, a lady came in selling 80's auto cards her son had gotten. The guy buys them for $1 each to put in grab bags and got about 20 from her. I asked if I could look through them and he said any that i wanted i could have for $1 each too. So I perused the lot(most were very common), I did find 2 though...

me too, jim!!!!!!

Joe Niekro is one of my all time favorites ever. He was a terrific pitcher and had a great sense of humor. He was always cracking jokes when you met him in person. He is still the Astros all time wins leader, which is even more impressive considering the Astros picked him up at the end of the '74 season for the waiver price. No one else wanted him. The rest of baseball thought he was a flash in the pan. Joe was a perfect fit for a Houston franchise that was going through a lot of upheaval and rebuilding at the time. That's why I always thought it was fitting that Bill Virdon turned to Niekro to shut down the Dodgers in the one game play off at the end of the 1980 season. The Dodgers had just swept the last series of the season against Houston in dramatic fashion ( three victories & three walk off home runs) to force a one game playoff. The way Niekro pitched that day the boys in blue couldn't hit that knuckleball with a paddle. Those four games were the fiercest I've ever seen, and four I will never forget with many thanks to Joe Niekro.
