What is that it, you ask? One return? How is that phenomenal, you ask?
Clyde had a thunder bolt for a left arm when he was baseball's number one draft pick in 1973. Every major league club drooled over the idea of getting him. He was indeed a phenom. The Rangers paid him the biggest signing bonus ever at the time, and brought him to Arlington to make his major league debut just a few short weeks after his high school graduation in Houston.
The plan was to give him a couple of starts, and send him to the minor leagues for seasoning. When he made his major league debut, on June 27, 1973, he showed the baseball world what kind of promise he had. After walking the first two hitters in the first inning, he quickly settled down to strikeout the Twins 3-4-5 hitters to end the inning. While Clyde was a bit wild in his debut, he only gave up one hit in his 5 innings pitched, a two run shot to the number 9 hitter. Clyde pitched superbly in front of the first sellout crowd in Rangers history, and out dueled Jim Kaat for his first major league win. When the stadium sold out again for his next start, the Rangers shelved those plans to send him to the minors.
Unfortunately, Clyde's arm flamed out from misuse, and never fulfilled his promise, but he sure was fun to watch for that short period of time he was in the majors.
