I spotted these on ebay and knew I had to have the Steve Garvey item. Unfortunately the seller wouldn't offer me the Garvey, so I had to buy the entire lot or risk losing a chance to get the Garvey from another buyer or have the seller not sell the lot and disappear with all of them. From past experience, you need to strike when you can on something like this.
I'll scan the item when I have more time, but basically it appears to be a beer can flat that had the RC Cola baseball players printed on it, over the existing beer label. The front has an Elk Grove Wisconsin Beer label, brewed and filled by Water Brewing Company, Eua Claire, WI (http://www.waltersbeereauclaire.com/history-of-walters-beer.html) with the RC Cola label printed over it and the back has a label for Deer Brand Beer (http://www.schellsbrewery.com/ourbeers_info.php?id=12). I can't really find anything specific on Elm Grove Wisconsin Beer. Perhaps it was a local brew, made specifically for the town in Wisconsin. Here is what the can looked like though...thanks to an ebay seller. http://cgi.ebay.com/ELM-GROVE-Vinta...aultDomain_0&hash=item1c1a87d02e#ht_500wt_922
I know nothing about brewing or creating beer cans, but I am guessing that this was some sort of proof sheet used to see how the labels would look. Since there appears to be 3 different labels, I can assume this was no simple mistake.
The seller indicated he got them directly from the Continental Can Co. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continental_Can_Company). He believes they were the firm who did the printing for the various products, which would make sense, as those three organizations don't appear to otherwise be connected in anyway other than they were sold in cans! I have never seen anything like it before. I have the regular Garvey RC Cola flat, the White label version and now this one as a third variation!
If you have a favorite player in this set and might be interested in one of these, I have a number of different players. I have not determined what I would like for them yet, but this would be a buy option only. No trades at this point. I'll probably list them on ebay and see what the market bears, but feel free to make an offer if you are really interested. Ideally, I will be able to sell enough of them to recoup my original investment, making the Garvey free, perhaps even turn a profit. I think the original seller goofed by selling the entire lot, but then again maybe I am the only person who thinks these are great items, many of which may likely be one of a kind (there were some duplicates).
I have the following players besides Garvey:
Johnny Bench
Vida Blue
Bobby Bonds
Steve Braun
Lou Brock
Bert Campaneris
Jose Cardenal
Cesar Cedeno
Mark Fidrych
George Foster
Wayne Garland
Bobby Grich
Ken Griffey
Don Gullett
Mike Hargrove
Jim Hunter
Randy Jones
Dave Kingman
Bill Madlock
John Montefusco
Thurman Munson
Amos Otis
Joe Rudi
Tom Seaver
Rusty Staub
Don Sutton
Gene Tenace
Luis Tiant
Claudell Washington
Carl Yastrzemski
Robin Yount
Richie Zisk
