Anyone ever make an effort to get as many of the same base card as they could?

Hey everyone,

With some of the larger ebay lots I've picked up I've gotten dozens of the same card. It made me wonder if anyone here on The Bench either has or known someone that has gone out of their way to get as many of single card as possible. Also, how successful were you?

Thanks,

Frank

I thought about doing that with something like 87 Topps Cal Ripken just to do something different but after about two minutes of contemplation somewhere way back in my head I heard a voice say "SERIOUSLY ?????" and moved on.

i think someone here has a multiple of cards like that, can't remember who. droubay maybe? i thought i saw a post from him of something similar to this. don't remember if he was actually "trying" to do it, lol.

Tried that a long time ago....Frank Thomas 1990 leaf......I have over 100 in my personal collection....stop getting once they when over the $45.00 range. Best regards, David

I am not seriously trying to gather multiples of any base card, but over time, buying bulk lots and such, you start to collect multiples.

I probably have 200+ 1979 Topps Steve Garvey cards for example, because I won several cheap lots of 50 years back.

I'll pick up his RC too in quantity when they are a steal. Here is a shot I took a while back. I probably have not added too many more since though.

OpenChecklist lets you add up to 10 of the same card at a time. I've had a user ask to add over 1200 of a single card into his collection.

I helped the user out, but that would be just weird seeing that many of the same exact card in front of me.

I still have a huge stack of the Jason Isringhausen Diamond King card. I just bought them when I saw them for years, and the thought of "cornering the market" came to mind when I hit 1000 of them, then one day I realized there were 10000 of them made, and was there really a "market" for it, LOL. I WAS the market, LOL. Still have them in a box somewhere, and I'm pretty sure there isn't any shortage of that card on the market despite my hoarding it, LOL.

I have over 400 each Jose Canseco 87 Topps, 88 Donruss, & 88 Topps and over 100 each of several other different cards of his. When I first got on ebay I was buying huge lots of Canseco cards. Right now I have well over 10000 of his cards, and I have not really collected him in years.

I have quite a few multiples of Jim Thome's early cards from getting dupes in large lots or getting good deals on dupes in smaller lots, mostly his minor league cards and 1991-92 cards. I have about 70 of the 1992 Upper Deck #1 card of Klesko/Thome.

The only card of his that I try to collect as many as I can is the 2005 Topps Gold #25 card. I got my 13th earlier this month, and I'm looking for more. It's more fun (challenging) than getting base cards. It's also cheaper and takes up less room than getting hundreds or thousands of a base card. Good question.

MJ is right i do go out of my way on certain cards.. like mopar when they are reasonable. i have over 100 curtis martin sp rookies for example, including a silver foil one which is the only silver one I have ever seen and there are others

It would be interesting to know if you had every card made of a certain common player, say a 2012 Topps #2 Travor Cahill, and you destroyed all but 1 of them, would the value skyrocket if you could document such a thing. First of all you'd have to know how many there are of each card.
Does anyone know how many cards Topps prints of a typical card?

I know people were getting the Mantle HR #1 in multiples just from opening packs, but I once made a purchase offer of a bulk lot of 1990 Topps that had 1000 each of Cal Ripken & Ryne Sandberg. I still have some bulk of 1990 Upper Deck that has between 200 to 300 of each player.

Thanks for all the great responses. Next time my wife wonders why I keep trading for cards I already have I can point to this thread and show her that I'm not the only one! :D

Back in the day I think I had around 66 1989 Topps Gregg Jefferies cards and I used to horde them at one time. Nowadays I'll pick up 2001 Upper Deck Tiger Woods RCs. I have 15 of them at the moment and still looking provided I feel the offer is fair.

I remember 20-25 years ago you could buy lots of 1000 or even more of pretty much any Topps, Score or Donruss regular issue card. They were in the ads in SCD. I bought 500 1984 Topps Tony Armas cards once, just because I could. Somebody somewhere still has 495 of those I'm sure.

Problem with "cornering the market" means there has to be a market first. Judging from the number of serial numbered to 50,100,200 cards that I get in dime and quarter boxes I would guess cornering the market would only provide you with some sort of bragging rights.

Now if you are talking serial #'d cards, I have quite a few of Matt Lindstrom. I know, not exactly what everyone is looking for, but as far as /10,/25, /50, I may have a few stored away :D :D :D

I haven't checked in awhile but I have a very large number of the Mantle HR1 card. I'm still willing to trade for them to fill in the trade value if someone is stuck. But, I only accept 25% BV because, let's face it, nobody needs it or wants it.

At the time, I was so irritated over the card I was going to take the whole lot to Topps and demand something else in return for their wasting my money (I was working near their offices). Never did it.

Every once in awhile, some will show up for "free" in a trade.

If anyone has any, I'm interested! :)
