if this is true, why do some teams not have players on their 40-man secondary roster called up when some teams have them all called up? this fact seems to contradict what you just wrote. or am I wrong and every player on every team's 40-man secondary roster just got called up to the active roster for spring training?

thanks for the insight!

Looks like that is what happened!

It does not seem like this happened in years past but it looks like you are indeed correct Cory; all teams had all players from their 40 man secondary rosters called up. Interesting!

There are no non-roster invites in OOTP. All players on your 40 man roster will automatically be called up to ML level at the start of Spring Training. MLB does the same thing with the 40 man roster but they have non-roster invites.

Long story short...ANYONE on your 40-man secondary roster is promoted to the active spring training roster each spring.

So, if your minors are chock-full of veterans without options, you will have to make them clear waivers or release them after spring training. There is NO WAY around this.

Also, this is a great, good, excellent, outstanding reason NOT to place your prospects on the 40-man roster until you need to! Each season you send them down and burn an option, the closer you are to having to make a decision regarding their future with your team (or affecting another player's future).

Every season I see people complain about having to waiver and release players, and a lot of the time it is the people that call up just about anyone they can get their hands on to their MLB roster.

It has happened in previous years, but most teams had little or no players over 25 on their 40-man secondary rosters. Now that many teams are at the limit, a much more realistic process takes place.

Veterans who are out of options that don't make the active roster out of spring training will have to be waived, and even then if they clear waivers, they may refuse assignment to minors, meaning some other players will have to be released, or the player in question will have to be released.

Look at the newspapers in real-life....transactions happen on a daily basis regarding teams' 40 man rosters.

This is directed to everyone, not just in response to Sinocc.
