Card Condition Communication,..Not again !!

On my site if any card is damaged whether it be ding or off centered or even an auto that is smudged or not centered-I put a simple message next to the card so there is no confusion.

Have you EVER seen a trade list that mentioned: 2008 Joe Blow card is 70/30 centering?!? 2009 refractor card has ONE minor surface scratch (which most do in some aspects).

I have seen this on plenty of peoples trade list.

A question for you all. As traders here on The Bench, what is the standard condition expected when receiving a card and condition is not specified? Gem Mint? Mint? Near Mint/Mint? Near Mint? By who's guidelines are we to follow? PSA, BGS, SGC? There are so many interpretations of a condition with the slightest differences (BGS 8 centering 60/40 but PSA 8 allows 70/30 or better), does The Bench follow a particular one?

For Example:

BGS 8:

Near Mint/Mint 8
Centering: 60/40 both ways or better on front. 80/20 or better on back.
Corners: Sharp to the naked eye, but slight imperfections allowed under close examination.
Edges: Relatively smooth borders. Specks of chipping visible to the naked eye are allowed.
Surface: A few minor print spots. Very minor color or focus imperfections. Solid gloss with very minor scratches detectable only upon close inspection. Or a subtle metallic print line.

PSA 8:

A PSA NM-MT 8 is a super high-end card that appears Mint 9 at first glance, but upon closer inspection, the card can exhibit the following: a very slight wax stain on reverse, slightest fraying at one or two corners, a minor printing imperfection, and/or slightly off-white borders. Centering must be approximately 65/35 to 70/30 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the reverse.

SGC 88 NM/MT8:

65/35 or better centering, corners sharp to the naked eye but may exhibit slight wear under closer examination. A few small flaws may exist upon close examination. A small flaw may be, but is not limited to: very minor wear on one corner, a gloss break or surface scratch, a print line or refractor line, a focus or color imperfection, or a print spot.

Dealing for collectibles online is one that involves a risk of disappointment BECAUSE YOU CAN'T INSPECT THE ITEM IN PERSON AND YOU ARE RELYING ON SOMEONE ELSE TO MAKE THE CALL FOR YOU! Again, anything that is not sealed is "used", regardless of how you want to grade it. Cards can appear to be "mint", but are altered, trimmed, colored. Not everyone has the skills or knowledge to see that. Heck, some people on this site can't always identify a proper card make, set or year. The defect may escape one persons eye, but is a glaring flaw to another. Some people collect for the fun of it and don't see value or lack thereof in strict conditions. Much like we differ on opinion on most matters discussed here, so are there differences in how things are seen and judged between parties.

If you are the type of person who overreacts because of a small flaw that might have been overlooked, without giveng the benefit of the doubt that it may have been an honest mistake or difference in judgement, then that needs to be put in your trade list or signature too, so the rest of us can avoid you! On the other hand, there are people I wouldn't trade with even if they had something I needed because of how they interact on the boards and in threads. You just know sometimes...

I have seen this on plenty of peoples trade list.

As have I. I have it on some cards on my tradelist.

To me, as a trader, I'm trading one need for another, I'm NOT GRADING (nor can I) a card for the other party. As long as it "falls in the context of near mint" or above, I will list the card for sale/trade.

Clint and I were referring to cards that are centered 90/10 - does that fall in the context of near mint to you?

Anyway, post #6 in this thread has the Bench's official stance on it for anyone interested:

This thread took off,..
I've cooled down a bit since yesterday, still a little peeved but I'll get over it.

Because its on-line trading and not face to face I believe that we all have a added responsibility to consider the other person feeling about the card you are sending.I rarely trade cards to flip them, almost all of them go into my PC so I tend to be a bit more picky about what I am receiving.
I don't want to come across being a big (insert word here) and I don't want to trash out someones rating,it brings me no comfort and with my old age I tend to be more understanding and accepting, but sometimes resposibility comes with accountability,..

I know it just a baseball card,no big deal in the big picture of life,..

I'll keep repeating that in my head,..
Thanks for the input everyone,..

Ya can't win for nothing,..
Here's the card that got me going with the condition problem.I asked the if the card had a centering issue. In his next post he sais nothing about centering,so I ASSUMED that the card is in good condition,..my bad.

Ok,..I got over it,
So I figure a few weeks later that I would take another shot at the card.
The person says the card has a ding in the corner,so I ASSUME that that is the only problem,..Here's the card.

Either:
A,..These traders are just liars,..
or
B,..These traders have no clue that centering is a CONDITION ISSUE !!

I'm going to blame myself for this,..but I am asking for scans from now on when it comes to this product,..maybe everything,..
I know this site is built on a lot on trust,..I'm just disappointed,..

i agree with a little bit of everyone, they should say something when it comes to condition for cards, and major mess ups like smeared auto's are over the limit but when it comes to condition it's kinda eye of the beholder. you would almost have to trade graded cards and only graded cards to make everyone happy. i personally dont have any idea about what 90/10 even means. ( I mean i know the basics but not the science). and sorry to say i dont have anything to measure with, and many probably dont either. to me this is a hobby and not a business.

to think that both are going to give perfect cards are unrealistic at best. both will be nice but you know how it goes. and the scan of the card, except for the bent corner would be fine to me. granted not perfect but perfectly tradeable.

I also noticed most of you if any did not put anything about your basic minimums that you would except in your sig. that might clear up some things right there. and how many ask specifically what the condition is, centering etc. your kinda expecting everyone to know exactly what condition is good for you and not what is good for someone else. i also think if you give someone a chance to make it right they would, especially here where
feedback is essential. but thats just my opinion. also you must consider ive seen traders who are young kids who you cant really expect to know what your talking about when you get into deeper aspects of collecting, some of these kids are just trying to start a collection and get some wants without having to ask dad to buy it for them.

I quit trading for 2010 Chrome cards just for this reason. No one would tell me they were off center, scratched, or dented. I made sure I hit them hard on condition & communication on their rating.

I have recently started trading for random gu and cannot believe some of the conditions people are sending me. This includes HOF traders on this site who are doing this. Creases and chipping around the edges is not acceptable!

I have two extra sets of 2010 Topps Chrome and this is why I have not and probably will not sell or trade them. The QA on these cards are awful. The RC's (170 - 220), the impression around the player and player's name on most of these cards is noticably off. I still have not sent them back to Topps, one because it P Diddy's me off everytime I look and them and the other, so many people were returning cards, I thought I'd let it settle down. I will probably send them back this week. I am usually overly cautious when trading cards, but this set threw me.

Alot of the Xfractors and Orange refractors were miscut and the purple refractors, most are warped.

If I do sell or trade after the return from Topps, I'll probably get no where near decent return.

I agree,
A condition sensitive set for sure, but that makes getting a good one even better.
I received a Griffey Orange that almost perfect, plus a traded away a Strasburg and Heyward refractor that was almost flawless,..
Are 75% of them screwed up in some way? Yeppers,..and thats why I asked the traders about the condition of the cards before I posted the trade.

I'd be worried more about the munched corner on card #2 than centering for either, but then again, unless it's totally lopsided, I don't generally have major issues with centering.

If condition is critical...Scans and communication. Enough said.

I've asked so many people how the centering is on their cards, especially with the 2010 Topps Chromes...People probably got sick of me asking if the card is "well-centered". If it's not close, I don't want it.
