Kevin here is an interesting tidbit on Robert Parish. He was drafted by the Warriors 2 years after they had won their NBA Championship. I would guess Parish was selected to replace the previously much discussed Clifford Ray. Here is a little paragraph of Robert Parish's draft history.

After college, Parish was drafted in the first round of the 1976 NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors. He had also been drafted by the Utah Stars in the 1973 ABA Special Circumstances draft and by the Spurs in the 1975 ABA draft. Parish signed with the Warriors. The Warriors were NBA champions in 1975 (two seasons prior to Parish's rookie campaign). However, when Parish joined the Warriors, their decline had begun, and they missed the playoffs completely from 1978 to 1980.

If Parish had signed with the Utah Stars he would have been joined by the first high schooler to go straight to the pros, Moses Malone. That would have been a heck of a Twin Towers!

I'll go with 3 toady as that is DJ's uniform number

Numbers chosen: 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 13, 16, 17, 19, 29, 33, 34, 35, 39, 43, 44, 55, 56, 65, 69, 72, 73, 75, 76, 84, 85, 93.

Jeff,

That is super interesting about Parish, I had no idea he had been drafted twice by ABA teams....I wonder how the ABA would have been different, had some players elected to play for those teams? I think the merger would eventually have happened anyway, but the talent in the ABA (Moses Malone, Dr. J, George Gervin, the list goes on!) was in my opinion, far superior to most NBA players in that era (70s) aside from maybe a handful, Havlicek comes to mind first, as he was Dad's favorite, Dave Cowens, and I know there were others. Rick Barry, deadeye free throw shooter.

Cool stuff, thanks for sharing. Would love to see Parish coach in the NBA, I know that has been his retirement dream!

Happy St. Patrick's Day to all!

I really miss the ABA. As a kid I thought it was just the coolest league ever with all the teams from obscure (at the time) cities and areas. Plus, the style of play was wide open and was the forerunner of today's "small ball". Throw in the three point shot, the incredible dunking and the fast aced action and it was tailor made for this small town kid! I just was obsessed with the league. But then again, as a grade schooler I much preferred watching the AFL over the NFL for many of the same reasons. The ABA did lack the number of quality big men (with a few exceptions like Malone and Gilmore) so Parish signing with the ABA would have been an interesting thing to see,

Kevin you mentioned Hondo Havlicek and I have a question about him that old school Celtics fans may be able to help me with. Wikipedia says he got his nickname from the 1953 John Wayne movie "Hondo". However, he does not resemble John Wayne at all. Havlicek does however look very much like the actor who played Hondo in the short lived 1967 TV series by the same name.........actually it was loosely based off the movie. I think Havlicek got his name because he looked like Ralph Taeger who played Hondo in that TV series. I wonder if that is the case because those two look whole lot alike.

Here is the Wikapedia page on the show. Tell me if you think that TVs Hondo looks like The NBA's Hondo. I sure think so and I am guessing that is where he go his nickname.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hondo_(TV_series)

I'll go with 67 today for the one year Hondo was on TV and where I think Havlicek got his nickname.
