Hey, everyone. First off, thanks to The Bench for being great friends to COMC over the years, and thanks Peter for creating a forum for us and giving us the "OK" to post this. We’ve launched something called the COMC Challenge and we’re running a series of contests to help encourage everyone to get involved. We need more people in the community participating. Our goal is to get as much as possible done before April 1st.

1st contest: The top ten Challenge points-earners each week (Sunday-Saturday) for the next two weeks will each receive $100 COMC Store Credit. Each week we reset the scoreboard so even late-comers will have a fair shot.

2nd contest: Every 5,000 points you earn in total before April 1st gets you one entry into a drawing to win COMC Store Credit prizes up to $1,000.

Why the Challenge: We posted a video outlining a very general view of our vision which is to team up with the community to make our new catalog. Generally speaking there is so much potential data that one could have on a card or set of cards that it isn’t feasible for any one company to attempt to build a truly comprehensive database for everything. We aren’t trying to do it all by ourselves, though. We’re teaming up with the crowd because we believe that if everyone contributes a little it becomes possible to make something amazing. Our current Challenges are just the beginning. We’ve had requests for college, draft round, HOF status, on-card auto vs. sticker auto, multi-color patch… it is all possible through the structure we’re building.

Updates: We’ve started adding Team Challenges, beginning with Basketball and we’ve just added Hockey. The more basic data we acquire the faster we can move on to deeper data and the faster we can roll out sorting and pricing features. Again, our goal is to get as much as possible added before April 1st.

Please check out the Challenge, try it out, and if you have any feedback or suggestions let us know. We are also asking anyone who supports this effort to help us spread the word by sharing links to our blog post (or this post), or by telling friends in the hobby about the Challenges and how they are helping us to build the best database out there - basically, any way that gets the word out to other collectors that we're building something that we all stand to benefit from, and we need some help in the next three weeks to do it. This is a joint effort with the community and we are excited to hear what people have to say.

Thanks,
Jeremy

I both buy and sell sporadically on COMC and love the website, so let the following be more of a constructive criticism. Any attempt at all to unseat a price guide monopoly is a great thing for everyone in the hobby!

The only issue I have with the challenge is that the weekly top points gainers have such a gigantic lead, that even the promotion of the weekly portion of the contest is pointless. Just running some quick math, someone apparently spent 14.5 hours last week alone entering these challenges (assuming a perfect score and a 90 second average time per entry).

Yes, the more data you get, the better you can present things and increase service, which we are all looking forward to seeing. Why even bother with the weekly giveaways, why not just run the 2nd giveaway as at least there is a glimmer of hope there.

Welcome to The Bench! I always love buying inserts from your website! Best regards, David

Hi, thanks for the welcome! We've liked The Bench for a long time. Glad you're finding good stuff on COMC!

A lot of our best improvements have come from constructive criticism. However people feel, we chiefly want them to feel engaged - that we're listening and we know we won't come up with all the good ideas by ourselves. We talked a while about how to express our gratitude to folks helping us with the COMC Challenge. We felt the two different contests would help reward the super dedicated people but also offer something to the more casual contributors. Once the guide is live we'll still keep adding all sorts of data to it (who knows, maybe forever... there's a lot of things you can catalog about cards that folks might want to search by), and we're visualizing a lot of ways to encourage / reward people for helping at any level. Thanks for the feedback!

Just a heads-up that the new "Founding Contributor" badges are live on the site for users who have earned 20,000+ points. Those will only be available through the end of this month.

Thanks!
