Thanks guys. The Term White Whale just confused me a little.
I have heard it before but paid no mind to it. Printing plates
just made more sense to me.

Of course, the answer to the question of "how many can there be" is "as many as Topps wants, because they make the rules and they know we're just going to buy them anyway."

:)

Yes! I'm not sure where the term "white whale" came from.........Probably some marketing guy at Topps smoking something "white"!

Received the White Whale listed above in the 1st link in post #1. I was expecting it to read on the back as a Printing Plate of a given color,
but it did not. Instead it read WHITE WHALE just above the 1/1 in the upper right hand corner. So the White Whale vs the Printing plate
still has me confused.

I don't think it's a negative for this reason; here's an example............

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2015-TOPPS-...-BRAVES-SSP-/121774029780?hash=item1c5a4c3bd4

The tone of the hat, glove and right sleeve are the same, black...........The first sample you listed the glove is dark and the sleeve and hat are white............The glove should be the same tone as the other two elements............Not sure if this is confusing or helping.............I think I might be confusing myself!

Here's my (not so) expert opinion:

I think Topps used the term "White Whale" on all of the printing plates from Triple Threads.

So I think this one is the Magenta plate:

Here is the Yellow plate:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/22188835765...38.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&rmvSB=true

And here is the Cyan plate:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tom-Glavine...145752&pid=100011&rk=1&rkt=10&sd=221888357657

Pretty crazy that 3 of the 4 have already shown up on eBay. This is my best guess, but feel free to tell me that I'm an idiot and that my theory is completely off.

This is a maybe. But the card itself has no metal like printing plates do. Either way I at least now own a 1/1 of Glavine. It would
have been a better card had they not used a sticker for the auto.

the white whales issued by topps are cards made using printing plates as the top layer of a thick card.....some simply say white whale while others DO read white whale printing plate ....

while i can't confirm that topps packed out all 4 plates in each product i'm quite sure that all of them ARE made from printing plates....according to beckett's checklist , some products only have one white whale for a given card , though i feel this is simply another case of an incomplete checklist on beckett - i think it's similar to their stance on some of the late-90's printing plates which they listed as a single card with a print run of 4 instead of 4 colors with a print run of 1 each.....

as for the two glavine cards pictured , unless i'm going blind , i'd day both definitely do have a printing plate as the top layer .....

i don't have access to all my collection at the moment , but if i can get my hands on them , i'll try to get some scans posted showing a few more white whales for comparison....pretty sure i can offer up some both with and without the word printing plate used in the description on the card though it's clearly evident they are all the same...

Thanks for that info, it make more sense to me. You would think Becket and Topps would work together on being able to ID a given card correctly.
