OK - something's not right here. The cards are slabbed with "Dmitri Young Collection" and he's able to call PSA, demand a "10" and on the 3rd attempt they change it to a "10"?

So, as everyone has long suspected, their integrity is definitely for sale. Ted DiBiase would be proud.

Interesting, kind of remember him being a collector.................Buying a PSA grade is not surprising though................Hot tongue on rye? Maybe I'm just getting old or he's smoked too much *******..................

"For instance, I bought cases of the 1982 Topps set – Lee Smith's rookie year," Young says. "I'd go through them and pick out the Lee Smith cards. While I'm in there, I'd also set aside the Cal Ripkens and the Kent Hrbecks. I easily recouped what I spent because I had maybe 10 Cal Ripken cards, and at that time they were going for $1,000 each. Plus, I got the Lee Smiths."

Uh huh ! Yeah ! And if you think this fish is big you shoulda seen the one I threw back !

Lee Smith rookies, LOLLLLLLLLLLL

And when were the Ripken rookies 1,000?

The story says "Young sent it to PSA three times, asking that they bump it up to a 10. The third time they did." regarding the Willie Horton card. This could just mean Dmitri kept resubmitting until he got a 10, which a lot of people try to do if they think it's borderline and if they get the right grader on the right day it might get a ten. It doesn't mean he literally asked PSA to give him a 10 and they gave him one because they were nice or got some cash under the table. Unfortunate choice of words by the author, who doesn't seem like a collector but otherwise did a pretty good job with the story.

Also the part about the cases of 1982 Topps sets is ridiculous because there are 23 PSA 10 Topps Lee Smith RCs and I doubt they would cost very much, as mentioned by Droubaysports. I don't know how many sets he would need to buy to get TEN PSA 10 Ripkens, but judging from eBay they aren't exactly ultra-rare. They also seem to go for $400-500 currently, so it would be possible that several years ago when graded stuff was still kind of new and on fire they were approaching a grand.

I just got the SCP cataloge yesterday which is the auction house selling the cards. He also has several game used items for sell there as well.

agree 100% with your first paragraph....i also saw it as constant re-submitting hoping for a slight uptick but poorly phrased by the author....

as for the smith/ripken issue ...

there have only been two 82 topps lee smith psa 10s sold on ebay over the past few weeks...one closed at 104.50 and the other at 153.50....before there were tons of them available (yes , that was sarcasm) i believe i recall seeing or hearing about a few that went for 700 to 800 in the late 90's and early 00's (i can say for sure , that card is a tough 10).....they pretty much always brought in less than the ripkens (as they should) but still not chump change

as for the ripkens bringing in $1000....i'm not saying that was the "normal" selling range , but i am quite certain i recall seeing a good many reported sales that high (and beyond) .... if even a handful went that high then those sales must be considered when talking of what the cards went for so i can accept his numbers.......

I think DavidK is right. The PSa 10's may have been selling for 1,000 but I do not think raw copies ever sold that high. I will gladly sell anyone my raw Ripken rookie for a grand. Any takers?
