I was always curious about some the errors and variations from the 80s, when I was actively buying packs and sets. They always seemed to be impossible or ridiculously expensive. Now that those cards have settled quite a bit, some still have a following, but most are much cheaper and easier to find, especially with the internet. Still, some you don't see as often as you'd expect.

There were the White Letter Comstock, the "Craig" Nettles Fleer, the 5'1" Hrbosky, the reverse negative Dale Murphy, etc.

Today I was scrounging in the quarter box when I came across one that still has a pretty high BV (a "recent" annual had it listed for $25!), although I am not sure anyone would actually pay that kind of money for one. I had never seen one in person and thought..."why not for a quarter".

1989 Fleer Jeff Treadway "Target" card.

I have always wanted the 1980 Topps Fred Stanley yellow name variation. I have never seen one of these cards. Beckett lists it at 2.00. Or it used to. Not sure it is even in Beckett anymore. But if anyone has one I will pay 10.00 for it.

I think 1989 upper deck had a Mike Witt error that is worth decent value. I also wanted
The Dale Murphy and Gary sheffield from that same set.

When I put together sets, I feel they are not complete unless I have the Error/variation/sp cards....So I do go after them....The toughest one that I do have is the 1989 Topps Tony Oliva error card (No Copyright line on the back). paid a pretty penny or two for that one.
So if I have a complete set, that set has the error/variationsp cards.

Here is some of the sets I have that contain those cards:
1979 Topps (w/ #369A & #369B)

1987 Topps (w/ #'s 92A,92B,344A,344B,603A,603B,606,606A,671A,671B)

1988 Topps (w/ #'s 3,3A,4,4A,18A,18B,528A,528B,778A,778B)

1989 Topps (w/ #'s 27A,27B,605A,605B,665A,665B,689A,689B,697A,697B)

1991 Topps (w/ #'s 49A,49B,80A,80B,97A,97B,100,100A,131A,131B,155A,15 5B,167A,167B,236A,236B,279A,279B,306A,306B,324A,32 4B,337A,337B,366A,366B,378A,378B,451A,451B,526A,52 6B,527A,527B,593A,593B,599A,599B,603A,603B,656A,65 6B,656C,674A,674B,687A,687B,692A,692B,706A,706B,78 0A,780B)

1996 Topps (w #'s F7 & NNO- Both Mantles)

2004 Topps Traded (w #T221 Bonds)

2010 Topps Allen & Ginter (w/SPs)

2011 Topps Allen & Ginter (w/SPs)

89 Upper deck had a few that were interesting ( i have most)
Dale murphy reverse negative
Gary Sheffield Upside down SS on front
Pat Sheridan no position on front
Shawn Hillegas - Brian Holton on back
Freddie Manrique - Ozzie Guillen on back
and one or two more

The 1981 Fleer Craig Nettles was one that always eluded me back then. now I have a couple. Currently the variations I am looking for that elude me are the 1950 Bowman no Copyright backs...

OK, a couple mentions of the 89 UD Sheffield. Back in 93 or so when we was a triple crown contender and playing with the Padres, I was collecting his cards regularly. I have never seen the card that I am aware of. If you turn "ss" upside down, it is still "ss", so how do you tell which one is the error and which is correct? It must be obvious and I just have never seen it.

It is not obvious. I have been looking at that card since 1989 and still cannot tell the difference.

Going through large single lots of Dodger cards recently, it is pretty easy to find color variations of certain sets. It usually takes having a stack of 25-30 of the same card though, something most people don't have the luxury of having, especially really expensive cards.

I was thinking I would scan and document some of the variations I was finding in border colors, back shading, text colors, differences in the photo coloration, etc. It is actually very interesting. I'm sure most of these would not be considered true variations, but when you can see a distinct different in a stack of cards, I included both versions in my collection.

it's almost impossible to tell actuall.. kind of like the purple hat griffey

i remeber the 90 donruss like to get those. juan gonzo rev neg RR and the nolan ryan switch backs.

also 90 UD i remember in 90s was 100.00 plus the ben mcdonald oriols logo not the star rookie logo. have 2 of those. also the nolan ryan missing red banner 300 wins think 90 high series.

if anyone has these like to get the ryans and juan gonzo rev neg

I always wondered if the Oliva card from the '89 Topps set even existed, I've never seen one and the ones that are for sale on eBay never include a pic of the back of the card, only the front...go figure. But thanks greatdadx2 for at least confirming for me that it exists.

Does anyone have any variation cards for trade? I am looking for some and have some for trade.
