In addition to trying to collect signatures from the 89 Cubs, I've also started researching players who were born in my hometown or currently live here.
I found out that Bernie Carbo lives about a mile from my mother-in-law. Carbo hit a 3 run pinch hit HR in game 6 of the 1975 World Series that allowed the game to go into extra innings and set the table for the famous Carlton Fisk HR. After his career ended, Keith Hernandez went on record as saying that it was Bernie Carbo that first introduced him to *******. Carbo then admitted to being on drugs pretty much throughout his entire career. He has now been sober for many years and works with an organization called Diamond Club Ministry. I found an email address on the site for Mr. Carbo and sent him an email asking if I could send him a ball to sign. He was very nice and said that would be fine. I sent him an ROMLB and a Fleer Greats of the Game card. On Friday, I received both of them back signed.
I've sent a few more cards out sevral players from the area and I'm working on getting some cards to send for some of the other ones. I'll let you all know how it goes.
