Looking for opinions,
How long is too long when sitting on prospect cards? I tend to sit on them for 3 years to see what happens.Joey Votto would be a good argument,I think his FY cards are from 2002,..7 years,..

Well it depends on the team and player. I held onto a lot of Justin Masterson stuff from 2006 bowman chrome draft, he got really hot with the red sox at one point and his stuff was going like crazy.........and I still have them.

A good rule of thumb with prospects is if you have to ask about a player, the ship has already sailed on him.

Normally is they reach the age of 25 and are still in the minors.... Felix Hernandez, Ryan Braun.. Good times! Best regards, David

Roy Halladay,
I was busting 97 product and lucky enough to still have one of his RC's,thats 13 years,.

Halladay was a starter in the bigs, an ACE, and an all-star long before his stint with Philadelphia. He wasn't a prospect for 13 years.

This might stir-up the pot

Talking baseball, a long time prior to most players being drafted, Baseball America and other sources showcase enough potential stars to generate hype and interest among collectors prior to releases of first cards. That is provided Topps gets the checklist right. (A seperate debate for another time!)

Not in full agreement with someone posted earlier, once the card/player is on the rise it is not too late. I do not subscribe to the time paradigm regarding holding onto prospect cards. Looking broadly at all the prospect cards one hangs on to, I believe selling a card as it is garnering interest and increasing in value, not reaching peak value, ultimately maximizes a collectors ablity to realize profit on their investments.

Everyone wants to get in at the bottom and realize an Albert Pujols prospect auto at maximum value. What are the odds and how often does this happen? Look at Strasburg. Will he come back to the promised hype?

If the mission is to realize a prospecting profit, selling on the rise with the associated hype is key. To quote my grandfather "you will not go broke making a profit."

Considering what the "hobby" has become, 99% of the time I'd take the money and run on ANY "hot" prospect.

Buy low -sell high..... simple concept but difficult for most people

Rick Edelman, financial advisor, constantly talks about when rebalancing their portfolio they are selling off the items that have made the most money and keeping the "losers".

Extremely simplified, the idea is to sell off profit items and hold onto the rest. Simple idea but human nature is to sell the losers and keep the "winners" cuz they're gonna keep going up.

Talking about stocks but cards are the same thing. Take your winners when there !
