How NOT to mail your 1970 topps cards! Pictures!

Working at the post office this morning, scanning and toss parcels to the carriers came across this..... Saw a 1970 topps card and said hmmmm sorted some more parcels saw 5 more 70 topps cards loose..... Than I started looking for a open package where the cards were coming from. Moved a box and saw this...ugh....why don't people seal there boxes better?? I tape all sides of a box even the priority self seal boxes I tape it up all over (priority tape is free) and I tape p bible mailers to protect it from this..... The box was filled with 70 topps cards lucky I saw from the open spot he had bigger cards in a 100 count plastic box. Killabrew top and Jenkins on the bottom don't know what else was in it didn't dig thru but feel sorry for the guy.....both sender and receiver...... This is how it was in the OTR the machine drops them into the container so think twice how u ship your stuff.....

Based on the packages I receive, I'd say roughly HALF of the people sending stuff are clueless! That is not to say I get damaged items, but the potential is there. Things I have witnessed numerous times include:

Mailing 8x10 or larger photos, sheets, magazines or other flats w/o any sort of stiff backing or bend protection.

Lots of cards packaged loose into a box (like your example)

Lots of cards packaged loosely into a bubble mailer w/o any protection

Single cards in a PWE w/o a toploader or cardboard to protect from bending

Long items that will almost certainly be bent to fit packaged w/o bend protection

Heavy/bulky items packaged in boxes or mailers, flopping around loose in the container

Fragile items (glass or other breakables) not properly wrapper or padded

These people apparently have not had to deal with their stupidity enough (or yet at all) to put a little time and effort into making sure what they mail gets to the recipient in the condition it was sent. It still amazes me how often I get cards with little to no protection time and time again. Do these people not understand that these items can and are condition sensitive?

So, this big question is: What became of the loose cards? Did you gather them up, place them into the box and repair it or was it left to fate? If there are no rules that apply to this sort of thing, I imagine not all postal employees would bother or care about this or even recognize the issue past the obvious spillage.

Oh and note to self, don't buy from Helwig in Indiana!!

We put stuff back in open packages if we can identfy where it belongs. I put all the cards back in the box and tapped it back up and marked "found open/loose at post office"

It's funny when people mail a 8x10 in a plain paper envalope and put do not bend on it with no cardboard or anything to TRY to protect it! I get those mixed in with a parcel on top of it..... Go figure. A good test is if its protect enough....after your done wrapping it, push it off the table....do u trust it? If not needs to be packed better in my book! They go through machines not handled by a person....even if u put hand cancel they go through the parcel machine

These pics were painful to see...my first thought was that it was probably someone angrily or carelessly shipping cards to an "ex" or someone else and tried to send a message through poor shipping. The only problem is that if that was the case, they got more than they bargained for. If that was an eBay transaction or a trade between collectors, that is simply irresponsible.

I find this funny. I once took a small flat rate box to the postal office and person working the counter actually threatened to not ship my package because I had too much tape on it. She explained to me that if you can not ship the small flat rate box with just the self seal you shouldn't use the that shipping method. When I challenged her she got very sharp with me and told me next time try not to "laminate" the box with tape.

Wow just wow.
