Just started using excel to categorize my Sheffields. I had 10,000 + entered on my collections but I feel becketts gone downhill. I'm selling all my duplicates so I don't care about bv etc. How does everyone categorize theirs?

does anyone also know how to sort by number on excel? I know how to sort by year. I have Card, #, Auto, Price paid. as categories on top. Anyway I can just sort by # if I wanted?

You can sort a couple of ways in Excel.
1. Go to Data -> Filter, then sort by A to Z or Z to A
2. Click on Sort, then do the dropdowns based on how you want to sort, i.e. sort by column A first, then Column B, etc...
3. Right click on the coulmn header then select filter or sort.

I usually categorize by how it's listed in Beckett, something like this:
Year Manf. Set # Player BV
2012 Topps Allen and Ginter #4 Yu Darvish $8

I can organize them on paper, but physically storing and sorting them is a different "ballgame"!

Hope this helps!

I'm categorizing them but leaving out quantity and BV. I don't have online price guides and don't really care what the BV is anymore. I do however list the price I paid for it since I mark down on every eBay auction I win what I paid for it.

I use OpenOffice since it's free, but all spreadsheets are pretty much the same. I use different sheets for different years/sets which to me is easier than having one super large sheet.

I can understand how one large sheet would be confusing. Now does anyone know when I sort from A~Z I can sort them by years. Since I start it with like 2013 Gary Sheffield 110 $10.00
or something like that, now when I sort by a~z it'll put it in alphabetical order however it messes up the columns that corresponds to the cards number. Any tips? I'm currently just putting the card # in the description part but I'd rather have another cell. Thanks

Here's the way I sort. First shade all the data that you want sorted. That will keep the columns intact, ie it's just one row that won't be separated. Then if you want to sort by just year, you need a secondary column to guide how all the cards in one year are sorted. Does that help at all? If that makes no sense then don't pay any attention to it, because it's not complete. There is probably an easier way.

Use the "Sort and Filter" button in Excel. Then you can first sort by year, then by alphabetical, then by card#, or whatever order you want.

I used to use WordPad for my Indians collection.... A little over a year ago I decided to start my list from scratch and do it in Excel. I have somewhere around 15,000 different Indians cards.

I was going to use Beckett but I had some major concerns: there is no way to back it up (to the best of my knowledge).. so if something happens to the Beckett site, you could lose everything. It also didn't have enough flexibility, the process of entering the cards on Beckett is extremely time consuming and, like you said, Beckett has gone downhill.

I split mine into three distinct sheets: 2000's, 1990's and Pre-'90, and then tabs for each of the years. I have columns for Year, Brand, Set, Card #, Player and Attributes (RC, AUTO, Serial #, etc.).

In the last year, I have picked-up a lot more skill at Excel. Looking back, there are some minor things I would probably change but I'm pretty happy with what I have. One thing I definitely recommend is making a project out of it and entering the cards one-by-one.. it's a good chance to see some good old cards that have been sitting in a monster box for a long while.

Have fun,
Chris

I've basically done what you have... my only problem is sorting. Sorting 2008 moments and milestones it doesn't like to sort it alpha and numerically. Besides those moments and milestones its fine...however the way I have them entered for the moments and milestones it would list 2008 moment and milestone #52~1. then under it I would have 2008 moment and milestone #52~2. Dashes separating them. When it organizes it it makes them 2008 moments and milestones #52~1, 2008 Moments and milestones #52~10, 2008 Moments and milestones #52~11. Like it's organizing by the 1's in the cell. Haven't found a way around it yet.
