Is interest fading?

Part of it for me is I am terrible at starting conversations, online or in person. I can sit and watch people for hours and not say much if anything. At parties I keep to myself, same at concerts, at the bar, out with friends, etc. I will respond to questions/statements, but don't count on me starting a lot of conversation.

That said, it seems like in the last year or two it's been a lot of the same threads over and over. "Topps sucks, we need competition", "who should I have grade my cards/should I get my stuff graded", "I got damaged cards, what should I do?" "I hate redemptions" (both of these often piggybacked with the Topps Sucks thread) I feel like it's overwhelmingly negative and I catch myself being just as negative in responding. Add that to a lack of product a collector can just open and enjoy without having to worry about getting value back. Dropping $5-10 on a new product to sample is barely giving it a chance or in some cases not even able to give it a chance. Who actually LOOKS at the cards anymore when you spent $20-$200 (or more) on them, it's becoming a matter of "I'd better get SOMETHING for my money". It's getting too difficult to focus on things besides the money when $20 is the starting point. The oddball stuff isn't coming out like it did years back. When was the last time you saw a police set issue? or a gas station slurpee coin type giveaway? The closest I can remember around here is a 2005 Minnesota Twins Medallion promotion between Speedway/Super America gas stations and the local paper, but even that was get the paper, clip the coupon, go to the gas station, buy the medallion for $3+ tax and wait until the next day, building a set a was a $75 or so investment in a 25 day span, and then the last day of the giveaway:

There just isn't the volume of stuff around, what is there is more readily available across the hobby, and quite honestly, everyone seems a lot busier now than they ever have been, and other things are taking priority. Even in the Bench Sim league I see posts from people who won't have access for days at a time. I was on every night for I don't know how long, but in the last few months, I'm finding myself not at home at night to log on, and if work is busy, that's not always an option like it is today. I wasn't home last night, I wasn't on a couple nights before that, I know at least two days last week I wasn't on, it's easy to lose track of threads when you are not constantly checking. Like your action card thread, if I hadn't seen this thread, I wouldn't have known about it to post because I hadn't checked card talk in a day or two and tomorrow and Friday are typically days I don't access the Bench from work much

For me, trading has slowed a bit, but not too much. Joined a couple other sites to fulfill my sets and open myself up to more traders. Being on three sites is a bit of a challenge, but in comparing them, it seems like The Bench is a site mainly run by baseball collectors. Keeping this in mind, baseball hasn't had many new things come out as of late and there are many releases scheduled in the next month. For me, this is my biggest additive to what we are seeing with less posters and more lurkers.

In my case, I'm primarily a Phillies collector, but lately, I have been building Topps base sets as well, in hopes that the grandkids will have some fun with them when they get older, and frankly, I enjoy trading and putting the sets together. Once the base set is done, I try to build multiple Topps base team sets for a few friends who look for gifts for their kids/grandkids. As far as Phillies go, I reluctantly go after the parallel team sets - I say reluctantly because every year, I swear I'm not gonna chase blues, reds, golds, but I do. This year I am drawing the line at those three again, and, well, OK, the emeralds (what the hey, its only one more Phillies parallel set, might be fun!). Camo, pinks, blacks and purples - if I get 'em, fine, if not, so be it!!

My interest, the gist of this thread, hasn't changed much. But it's cyclical. Early every year, I'm on the offense, if you will, looking thru posts to try to locate Phillies cards when they come out. I read more posts, post more of my own, and trade more. When things die down, I might go try and find sale lists and scan them for Phillies I need from previous years. Interest peaks again when series II comes out, or when Heritage comes out, and then it dies off again; it might die off dramatically as long as the weather supports my other hobby, fresh water fishing. Sometimes, my interest is dictated by how I feel. I'm a retired senior citizen and sometimes these old peepers get strained reading a computer screen, or my body wants to just get in a prone position on the couch!

As far as this site goes, it's great. Communication avenues are wonderful... email when my threads are posted to is invaluable, Trade manager is hard to beat, topics are nicely defined and easy to follow. I appreciate all the efforts made by management!! Although its a case of teaching old dogs new tricks when changes are made, I eventually figure it out or find help somewhere on the site. Generally a great bunch of folks, many of whom go over and above just swapping book for book. I like that!!

Bottom line, I still am interested and enjoy this site very much. Collecting interests are about the same as when I started here, three years or so ago. Personally, I'm okay with no more Fleer, Donruss, Score, Upper Deck (yep, I'm a veteran from the '80s). Topps is plenty, too much on occasion. I will chime in on a thread if and when I can contribute to the "conversation", otherwise, I don't say much - that's just me. In this case, someone asked so I'm tellin' ya! ;o) Enough of my ramblings.

Be well, all!

It's easy to adjust your settings so that you'll see the old color scheme. Scroll down to the footer at the bottom of this or any screen. In the dropdown menu on the left, change the setting from "--The Bench" to "--Blue". This selection should persist across browser sessions.

Best, David

AHHHHH, thank you for this tip! the Blue looks much better!

As my interests have become more and more obscure (at least as compared to people who rabidly bust cases of every new product on the market), I've found that any threads I start usually end up dying a quiet, lonely death. If I'm going to be talking to myself, I might as well just do that on my blog.

Thank you for that interesting story. That type of crap is what makes collecting a hard pill to swallow sometimes. People feel the need to exploit a situatiuon for their personal gain and unfortunately the drive to complete the set lead to people spending too much for that hunter coin I'm sure. Looks like the situation was made right, but the only losers are those that bought the coin on the secondary market, only to watch the price plunge (unless the two runs of coins differ in some small way, enough to tell the difference).

There was a shop in my area that had a huge hoard of a SP college FB card. I think is was a Billy Joe Hobert card that was pulled when he was penalized. I can't remember the story, but the owner had a huge box of them, maybe most of what was printed. He would release them slowly, over many years. Not sure what happened to them after his shop closed, but that is the type of thing that will drive a collector crazy!

Thanks! Much better!

I agree, I just read this and glad I did. The economy took its toll on my collecting. 2 years out of a job in my field, working part time and keeping up with bills took a big hit to any kind of extra money for a hobby. Plus I have seen my activity on the board decrease since not many traders want "old trade bait". I do not bust open new wax nor do I buy boxes, just an occasional blaster if its payday and I am feeling lucky. Each year my bait gets another year older and less desirable it seems.

My wants have stayed the same since I got on The Bench but I think I have tapped out the members here and just started going to different sites and expanding my trading. I would gladly trade for my wants but I come up empty.

I've been guilty of lurking and not posting for the past 6 months or so...............Sometimes I suffer from "collector's malaise" and just need to peel back for awhile................Sound like I need to see a doctor?!?! Great topic and love the responses..................Thanks to BucCollector, the blue works much, much better.................Mike

they are here to get all the trouts and bowman chrome refrac and autos they can and move on......

I seem to remember 1-2 years ago the boards were filled with people who wanted to be Jason Heyward Super Collectors. He is still having a solid MLB career and these collectors, by and large, have moved on.

Not this Heyward collector. Though not too many people still want to trade his cards. Anyway, I'm glad for the prospectors and Trout chasers. They open a ton of product, which makes it much easier to get those cards on the secondary market.

Maybe just a pet peeve of mine, but I HATE when you click on a box break thread or a product review thread and all you get is a link directing you to a video (hate this the most) or directing you elsewhere! I hit the back button just as fast as I can and move on. If I wanted to watch a video I would go to YouTube. If I wanted to read a blog about something I would look it up on my own. Yes I know it's petty but it's the way I feel. :p

Well it is still winter season here been reading up on the NY Yankees shifting players around, moving them here or there however, who am I to speak. I don’t buy of the Internet after being ripped off more than 5 years ago with the loss of a large sum of my money. It taught me not to use eBay.

My last trade here and I am still listed as a rookie was sometime last summer. I am old school I want to see what I want to buy. I want to pick up the card, look it over, and place my eye piece along its edges. With that said, I found a local store who has a monthly trade night, and I must tell you I have had more fun in the last few months talking with the games, buying and trading cards with the group. Among that the pizza is good, door prizes are nice and I enjoy supporting the owner’s store. So I am guilty not doing much trading here these days.

As for the direction of this site I don’t see much difference. Looks, feels and functions like normal anyway, the off season is for most of the guys here to pick up the pace with their stores, websites, of eBay site that they may have drop the ball on. Anyway, I use this site for trade and finding a local store to do that with I use this site more for general information on cards what’s hot, what’s not, what being built, etc…mainly I am on the Yankees site.

Just did it. Thanks for telling me how to do this.

You might want to give ebay another try, they've changed things in the last 5 years so that now if you pay with paypal you are HEAVILY protected against nondelivery or item not as described.

I find myself part of the group that has slowed way down on trading and visiting the site. I got busy with other things and its hard to get back into something when you've been away for so long. I also have a much harder time locating items on my want list since I have such a high percentage of what/who I collect

My collecting activity has only slowed on this site. I simply do not like the format of this site any more. I know it sounds shallow but I don't like the colors, background, or format. I just don't find myself wanting to peruse the site any longer. It's a shame because this is one of the best group of traders around. I thought I would get used to it but I like plain and simple.

Jeff

I was never much of a trader, but the Card Talk on The Bench was by far the most interesting, however the change in the site really threw me off a bit and I haven't come back often since.
