One private message question

I would also suggest adding this in the FAQ section.
I get an email saying I have exceeded and/or nearing my 100 message limit.
I only had about 13 messages in my inbox.
I thought I had deleted the other ones, but I didn't.
Why is it that when I deleted these messages, I still have 84 others?
Note that these are not shown anywhere to my knowledge when my inbox is now at 0.
